What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator position at Orion Marine Group?

This position is accountable for the operation of several different kinds of equipment, such as excavator, dozer, wheeled loader, backhoe, motor grader/maintainer, cheery picker, and forklift. The incumbent assists other crafts by hoisting heavy equipment, moving machinery, and performing dirt work. The position reports to the Yard Superintendent and supports construction projects at Orion's various jobsites.

The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork most importantly, with each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works closely with the Equipment Manager and Yard Leadman and others at the yard to support construction operations.
  • Operates tracked dozers and excavators, forklifts up to 20,000 lb. capacity, hydraulic man lifts up to 80 feet, hydraulic motor graders/maintainers, wheeled loaders, and rubber-tired backhoes.
  • Operates tractors equipped with attachments such as but not limited front-end loaders, hydraulic thumbs, mowers/brush hogs and concrete breakers.
  • Operates various other types of stationary hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, or other mechanically powered lifts for the purpose of inspection, testing and repairs.
  • Performs rigging and flagging when required for special lifts.
  • Performs equipment inspections for operational and safety integrity.
  • Performs minor maintenance of and to all equipment operated including lubricating, replacing cables and chains, replacing hooks and safety latches, adjusting linkages and tightening hoses.
  • Coordinates project work with various work crew groups.
  • Complies with all plant safety rules and reports all incidents and events to immediate supervision for corrective action.
  • Attends all departmental safety meetings and actively supports & participates in safety programs and implementations.
  • Complies with all Orion policies, procedures & practices that are applicable to ensuring safe, efficient equipment operation.
  • Participates in various company and regulatory training designed to improve overall productivity and complete projects on time and under budget.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
  • All employees, current and former, must maintain confidentiality by not disclosing to others any confidential, proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of five (5) years heavy equipment operations experience is required. Prior experience must include being knowledgeable in the safe operation of various types of heavy equipment including forklifts, hydraulic dozers, hydraulic excavators, hydraulic manlifts, hydraulic maintainers, backhoes, front-end loaders, mowers/brush hogs and concrete breakers. Must be knowledgeable of corporate safety rules, regulations, and emergency response requirements.

The incumbent must possess a high level of mechanical aptitude, be an effective communicator, possess basic computer competencies, and be capable & willing to overtime and holidays, as may be required. The individual must also have the ability to work in confined spaces and from elevated areas on the jobsite. In addition, this individual must be able to think clearly and solve multifaceted problems in the field with personnel of various degrees of skill levels, education, and training.

The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate.

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.

In addition, the Heavy Equipment Operator must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Climbing scaffolds, ladders, and stairs, at varied excessive heights.
  • Twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching motions to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Entering and working in confined spaces, when required.
  • Lifting and walking with weights up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Performing very strenuous jobs while wearing breathing air masks, slicker suits, and other safety-related material.
  • Being exposed to various temperature extremes as dictated by local climate.
  • Being exposed to loud noise levels created by running equipment in the process areas.
