Position Title: Science Engagement Manager Department: Science Engagement Reports to: Director of Education Pay Class: Full-time Regular   Position Summary The Science Engagement Manager (SEM) leads the Science Engagement team to deliver exceptional guest engagement experiences that inspire curiosity and conversation through a range of activities on the public floor, including live science shows on stage and in the planetarium, and small group interactives in the exhibit halls. Bringing an innovation mindset to evolving science engagement practices, particularly where anti-racism, equity, access, inclusion and diversity is concerned, is highly encouraged.   Overall responsibilities include staff recruiting, training, and scheduling, creating and managing a departmental budget, managing relevant evaluation efforts and ensuring that program delivery expectations are fulfilled. This exciting role is a critical contributor to Pacific Science Center’s mission to ignite curiosity in every child and fuel a passion for discovery, experimentation, and critical thinking in all of us.   Essential Duties & Responsibilities Working collaboratively within and across teams to ensure quality guest engagement experience by helping to define, refine, iterate and deliver science engagement offerings and programs. Programming offered by the Science Engagement team includes: Live presentations that for small and large groups take place in a planetarium, physical stage, and Science on a Sphere Small cart science demonstrations, and one-on-one and small group interactions Ensure staff have skills to effectively serve a variety of audience group sizes and types, including all ages general admission, onsite school field trips, special events and private event rental interpretive experiences Modeling effective program delivery and content development approaches while utilizing innovation where and when it will improve those efforts Being able to effectively create, communicate and implement programmatic vision. Actively seeking ways to incorporate other ways of knowing and understanding in program development Leading in the recruitment, training, scheduling and support of a science engagement team of diverse facilitators. Nurturing excellence in science engagement staff by encouraging professional development, personal growth and skills building Effectively communicating between multiple departments and programs in day to day operations; problem solving to resolve issues that may arise and stepping in where additional support is required Leading the department in data management, including accurately engaging in systems for daily scheduling, time card approvals, daily updates, and program attendance tracking Creating and managing a smart departmental budget that balances the needs of staffing and programming with fiscal practicality Serving as project manager for projects that advance Science Engagement and organizational efforts Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the organization’s discretion   Position Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of: Personal bias and a desire to be and lead others to be anti-racist educators Informal learning education practices of free choice learning in museum-type spaces Effective staff and program management practices Utilizing STEM education in informal learning environments Skills: Highly organized, strong attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal skills Proficiency in software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and file sharing programs such as SharePoint; ability to learn quickly learn new software and hardware systems Proven clear verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and performance techniques Excellent customer service skills including the ability to represent Pacific Science Center’s mission and focus on guest experience Budget creation and tracking Ability to: Bring a flexible and innovative mindset to this work including problem solving Manage multiple projects through prioritization and planning Manage expectations and convey priorities to other departments requesting support Work independently and as well with teams Thrive in a fast-paced, guest facing environment   Qualifications Required Minimum 3 years of experience working with K-8 students in a formal and/or informal educational setting, such as a museum, after-school program, or youth camp Minimum two years of staff supervisory experience Minimum two years of program operations experience Work must be performed onsite. In order to adequately support science engagement team, schedules will flex based on seasonal cycle needs throughout the year and range from working full weekends to some weekend days and some evenings pending seasonal adjustments Preferred Knowledge of present trends in informal science education Fluency in second language such as but not limited to Spanish, Somali, Mandarin, ASL, and/or Vietnamese Museum Studies experience, Interpretation Certification, and/or Teaching Certification Volunteer management experience Adult education experience in a formal and/or informal education setting   This position description generally describes the principal functions of the position and the level of knowledge and skills typically required. Salary : $33 - $43
