Position Title: Special Education Teacher on Special Assignment: Behavior Specialist
Reports To: Building principal
Contracted Days: 195
Salary: Licensed Teacher Schedule 5 days and $3,500 stipend
Objective of the Behavior Specialist:
A Special Education Teacher on Special Assignment is responsible for supporting K-4 students with the most severe behavioral needs. Position objectives include: collaborating with campus teams (Primary and Intermediate) to ensure processes and procedures are followed for our student behavioral needs, facilitating the use of evidence-based practices for behavioral support, and ensuring progress monitoring and response to data. A Special Education Teacher on Special Assignment will provide support through the collection, analysis, and interpretation of multiple data sources to directly impact learning academically and behaviorally.
Responsibilities of the Behavior Specialist:
- Work collaboratively with district staff and families to create supportive, inclusive, and respectful learning environments for special education students, particularly students who exhibit challenging behaviors.
- Conduct observations and fidelity checks on implementation of behavior plans.
- Collaborate with the building team to determine individual student needs, and as needed, create and support implementation of the behavior success plan.
- Maintain timely and accurate records of behavior incidents and support the student team with ongoing progress monitoring to evaluate the plan's appropriateness and any need for modifications.
- Collaborate regularly with other staff and engage in data-based decision-making as well as ongoing review of documentation and progress monitoring to support the management of challenging behaviors.
- Provide modeling and coaching regarding the implementation of behavior interventions and behavior support plans.
- Share responsibility and offer assistance to co-workers with the intent of gradually releasing responsibility for behavior support and intervention to the school-based team.
- Communicate clearly with students, building teams, and parents.
- Maintain the confidentiality of students, building-level teams, and families.
- Provide structured, intensive interventions in a small group setting
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisors.
Qualifications and Experience:
- At least three years experience as a special education teacher with demonstrated knowledge of behavioral strategies
- Ability to manage the expectations of both building and district leadership
- Evidence of professionalism and leadership skills, including effective communication skills, building trust and rapport with a variety of teachers
