JOB SUMMARY

The Maintenance Technician will install, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical equipment and distribution systems. The role will also support the Maintenance Manager in determining daily priorities, establishing work goals, and developing resolutions to common problems. The Maintenance technician is responsible for priority repairs and timely/efficient maintenance of Pel-Freez equipment and facilities including farms, transportation equipment, and the processing plant. The role will utilize their electrical, motor controls, mechanical, welding, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC, and automotive repair experience to assist the team with day-to-day operations and ensure the up keep of equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    • Responsible for electrical, ventilation, heating, plumbing, refrigeration, air, and water system troubleshooting and repair across Pel-Freez facilities.
    • Maintain and repair a variety of Company equipment including, but not limited to, HVAC, refrigeration components conveying systems, onsite generators, trucks and tractors, , and other farm and processing machinery.
    • Perform a varied nature of work with minimal supervision.
    • Utilize the CMS program and respond to all work orders in a timely and professional manner.
    • Responsible for routine inspection and upkeep of Pel-Freez facilities and equipment.
    • Diagnose and repair complex system failures including electrical, refrigeration, lighting, feeding, and environmental control systems.
    • Diagnose complex equipment failures.
    • Install, rearrange, and repair complex equipment.
    • Perform work within dominant skill area including fabrication, assembly, welding, layout, and electrical.
    • Repair, replace, and build wooden structures as needed, including pouring concrete pads.
    • Uses typical trade tools, inspection gauges, and electrical multimeters.
    • Direct the work of helpers and assist other trades as requested.
    • Read and interpret equipment manuals, work orders, drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to perform required maintenance and service.
    • Keep work area, tools, and equipment clean.
    • Diagnose standard maintenance problems, determine how to correct them, and verify repair.
    • Clean debris and lubricant from parts, work area, and equipment.
    • Operate production and shop equipment including, but not limited to, a lathe, drill press, grinder, and sander.
    • Operate a forklift, tractor, skid steer, and general farm equipment as needed.
    • Promptly report safety concerns that cannot be immediately addressed to the Maintenance Manager.
    • Direct the work of helpers and assist other trades as requested.
    • Comply with Pel-Freez, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies and procedures, food safety standards, general safety, animal welfare, and good manufacturing practices.
    • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Based on the essential duties listed above, this position is considered safety-sensitive and therefore all work must be performed following quality standards and established safety procedures.

EDUCATION & RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • An associate degree in mechanical engineering technology and/or completion of a recognized mechanical apprenticeship program is required.
  • Five years of experience in a maintenance mechanic role within a manufacturing, laboratory, and or farming environment is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of the abovementioned requirements.
  • HVAC, Refrigeration, and/or electrical certification preferred.
  • The ability to obtain a forklift certification is required.
  • A valid driver's license, an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, and the ability to be covered under the Company's automobile insurance are required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures and industry regulations and guidelines required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, familiarity working with farming and industrial equipment, and the ability to perform hands-on maintenance.
  • An individual capable of planning, scheduling, and performing work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and parts ordering software.
  • The ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and adjust to changing situations.
  • The ability to understand and comply with all company policies and procedures, and all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Perform mathematical calculations using addition, subtraction, ratios, percentages, and multiplication necessary for successful job performance in the shop.
  • A focused individual capable of repeatedly exerting physical strength to safely lift and transport heavy materials.
  • The ability to maintain great attention to detail and meet established quality standards while managing tasks of completing priorities.
  • The ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES AND INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS

The Maintenance Technician will assist in directing the work of Helpers. The role will be expected to frequently interact with co-workers, management, and third-party vendors.
