What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Development Manager position at Physician's Choice®?
We are looking for a resourceful, driven, and detail-oriented Product Development Manager to join the #1 Probiotic Supplement Company in the US. This person will be responsible for all aspects of the technical product formulation and product development process from ideation through commercialization and will partner with our marketing team through the development process to ensure we have a consumer and brand led innovation strategy.
This position requires an innovative thinker with strong business acumen that has the ability to translate and apply their technical expertise to business opportunities. The ideal candidate will have experience in the probiotic space and must be strategic, detail-oriented, possess strong project management skills, and be a strong leader and collaborator with both internal and external partners.
What You’ll Do:
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT:
- Deliver product launch objectives by working cross-functionally with Brand, Marketing, Design, Operations, Sales, Analytics, Demand Fulfillment and communicate progress to Leadership.
- Provides technical leadership and execution on the formulation, scale-up, technical transfer, and process development of new and existing products.
- Proactively identify and resolve budget, product, or timeline issues.
- Work closely with QA and Manufacturing partner on formula BOM and finished product specification creation and execution.
- Direct product development activities from formulation to commercialization for new product innovation.
- Lead product development activities for product changes including reformulation and new raw material qualification in a continuous cost saving lens.
- Confirm formulation accuracy for bench top and pilot runs of new products.
- Oversee label compliance as is outlined by the CFR with creation of the supplement facts panel.
- Culture proactive relationships with key suppliers to stay ahead of industry science and novel ingredients virtually and in person.
- Partner with manufacturers to stay current on new manufacturing processes and formulating for equipment efficiency.
- Travel to key industry trade shows to represent Physician’s Choice in supplier meetings and discovery as well as search for new ingredients to fuel innovation growth.
- Work with key partners on execution of TMLAs where necessary for labeling.

INNOVATION:
- Translates the Brand strategy into tangible product formulation guidelines.
- Lead the ideation conversation around desired claims prior to formula build out
- Collaborate with the NPI team on the process that funnels ideas from "white board" concepts through to completed formula designs ready for commercialization or placement into the product library
- Lead creation of the competitor analysis based on target competitors as outlined by Marketing, Brand or Leadership.
- Work closely with Brand and Marketing to determine new product pricing strategy.
- Joint ownership of the short, mid & long-term innovation roadmap in collaboration with the NPI team
- Foster an environment of High-Performance Teams: Work with the cross-functionally and develop passionate relationships (Product Development, Design, Operations, Sales, Analytics, Demand Fulfillment) to set the team up for success today, tomorrow and for the future. Work together to ensure the broader team is aligned on priorities and strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in a Science related field. A graduate degree is a plus.
Years of experience:
- 10 years of experience
Type of Experience:
- Proven experience in product development, formulation and commercialization within the CPG category, preferably within supplements.
- Experience in small to medium high growth companies is a plus.
Technical Skills:
- Strong business acumen and a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional and personal relationships with key business partners and the internal team.
- Strong technical knowledge of ingredient science, research, benefits and manufacturability within physical and process limitations
- Ability to review extensive research and scientific papers and synthesize for marketing direction.
- Superior ability to manage projects in an evolving priority state.
- Strong analytical and organization skills.
- Strong knowledge of regulations and industry standard methods for testing and quantification.
Soft Skills:
- Ability to present scientific information in a way that makes sense for the non-technical team.
- Experience with Google suite, including sheets and slides.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in an efficient manner to ensure timelines are met.
