About The Role
As a Journeyman Lineman at United Utility, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to communities across the nation. Under the direction of the Foreman or General Foreman, the Journeyman Lineman must safely install, troubleshoot, repair and remove overhead/underground distribution power lines; operate bucket, digger and pickup trucks, stringing and tensioning equipment, excavating and hydro excavating equipment, pull and back up trailers and associated specialty tools and equipment. The Journeyman Lineman provides limited oversight of apprentice level positions to further their development.
Key Responsibilities
- Obey and follow all safety policies and procedures set forth by company safety manual.
- Identify and use material required to install, frame, transfer or convert any/all equipment or accomplish any job required under distribution standards.
- Follow switching orders to transfer load, pickup load, de-energize load, obtain clearance and obtain non-reclosing orders to perform required work on electrical systems. Must be familiar with OSHA requirements for de-energized and energized line work.
- Troubleshoot, identify and repair operational malfunctions.
- Provide on-the-job training for groundman, equipment operators and apprentices.
- Conduct inspections of all equipment, document and initiate repairs or testing needs in a timely manner and in accordance with standardized procedures.
- Possess a working knowledge and ability to install, troubleshoot, replace and/or remove common distribution equipment including but not limited to transformers, capacitors, regulators, reclosers, switches, GOABs, CT/PT metering, and underground switchgear.
- Use all hot line tools in all situations in accordance with safety procedures.
- Cover primary and secondary, tie and untie and handle energized single and three-phase line using proper procedures in accordance with all safety rules.
- Operate all industry standard equipment in accordance with industry and safety standards.
- Instigate inspections, organize and maintain records for inspections of equipment and supplies included all tested equipment and tools such as rubber gloves, blankets, line hoses, insulated booms, hot line sticks, and insulated equipment handles.
- Organize equipment, tools, material, crew, paperwork, permits, safety equipment, staking sheets as necessary to accomplish task.
- Climb structures/poles and perform work from structures in accordance with company safety rules.
- Work from aerial platforms using material handling equipment in accordance with manufactures load limit specifications.
- Supervise individuals or groups to accomplish a job task, must be able to take on job responsibilities of Foreman in case of Foreman absence.
- Differentiate between various sizes and classifications of materials including but not limited to poles, wire, insulators, arrestors.
- Adapt to and be able to perform job duties within parameters of new technology including, but not limited to, video conferencing, web-based applications, and wireless phone, tablet or computer applications.
- Be familiar with excavating laws that fall under state 811, railroad commission or governing authority.
- Operate equipment used to locate and identify underground lines.
- Must be able to complete timely "Pole Top Rescue".
- Possess own basic hand tools.
Key Qualifications
- High school diploma or Equivalent (GED)
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience working on and around energized high-voltage primary electric lines
- Must possess a valid CDL-A license with clear driving record
- Must be able to read and understand technical information, manuals, policies, procedures, work orders, blueprints, spec books, system maps and diagrams
- Must be able to deal with emergency situations, hazardous conditions, multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, and time constraints
- Must possess leadership skills to provide guidance and training to assigned personnel in a safe effective and positive manner
- Must be able to understand and use the English language, both oral and written, to communicate information, instructions, and ideas to other personnel.
- Must be able to properly fill out documents and lead Job Hazard Analysis pre-job and post job meetings
- Must be dependable and trustworthy
- Train for foreman responsibilities

- Completion of an apprentice program or technical training as a lineman
- Experience working both underground and overhead distribution systems, installing and troubleshooting transformer banks, and operating a variety of specialized equipment

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to outdoor elements.
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- The position must have the ability to lift heavy objects weighing at times up to 50 pounds and carry that weight a minimum of 20 feet on a regular, recurring basis. Must have the ability to walk over uneven, steep, or difficult terrain for distances of over one mile on a regular, recurring basis and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. Must be able to carry 25 pounds of gear while working in an aerial lift device with a weight limit of 350 pounds. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to climb up to and onto elevated equipment and stand for long periods of time. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina. Must have the ability to hear long distances, see long distances and differentiate between colors, and have depth perception.
- This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work. MUST be willing to travel for storm recovery, length of stay will depend on volume of work.
- The position primarily works out-of-town during the workweek which requires weekly overnight travel. Out of area and extended travel is common and dictated by customer demand and power outages related to various natural disasters. Must be available to travel for work routinely and with very little notice.
