GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direction of the City Attorney, the City Prosecutor performs responsible and complex legal work, primarily in the prosecution of crimes, drafting of communications, and litigation of criminal cases. Works independently and applies professional judgement and skill in preparation and presentation of cases.
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Initiate and prosecute actions to protect the City's interests including preparation of pleadings and briefs, oral argument, conducting trial and plea negotiations, respond to appeals
- Appear in court for motions, changes of pleas and sentencing, settlement negotiations, trials, and reviewing performance of defendants after conviction.
- Serve as City Prosecutor for Pleasant Grove City.
- Provide professional advice to the Police Department.
- Conduct research, interview clients and witnesses, and handle other details in preparation for trial.
- Researches and updates case laws and statues.
- Coordinate efforts with the city's victim advocates and law enforcement.
- As requested by the City Attorney, performs civil law functions for the City including legal research and extensive analysis of legal positions and applies complex legal principles and precedents to specialized problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the Utah State Bar.
Experience:
- Prior experience preferred, particularly in municipal government and criminal prosecution.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of criminal prosecution.
- Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to evaluate and organize facts and evidence.
- Ability to develop sound legal strategies and procedures.
- Skill in presenting information orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and logical form.
- Ability to deal with stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights.
- Maintain effective working relationships with the public from varied racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds.
- Maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, court personnel, law enforcement personnel, other departments, and members of the legal staff.
- Maintain positive liaison with Police and other departments involved in the enforcement of City ordinances and state law.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening and background investigation.
- Stays abreast of current case law, statutory changes, and legal trends and innovations.
