What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor Pre-K-12 position at Pokagon Band of Potawatomi?

This is a year-round position with typical hours from 8a-5p M-F. Starting hourly rate: $22.32/hr. Must meet minimum requirements.

Commitment to Citizen Service

Service encompasses all aspects of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indian’s governmental operations. Every employee shares the responsibility to provide exemplary service, dignity, and respect to all Tribal Citizens, the Tribal Council, and staff members. To this end, all employees have an obligation to identify and report any service problems, issues, or concerns and through designated channels, initiate, recommend, and actively participate in solutions.

Position Summary: Provide academic support for all Title VI- Indian Education Grant Students. Serve as a liaison between students, parents, teachers, school administrators, Pokagon Government, and other resource contacts to provide academic support and advocacy services. Assist in planning and implementation of DoE summer programs for PreK-12 students.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as a liaison between the Pokagon Band and schools developing relationships with teachers and administrators, while representing the Pokagon Band at student / parent meetings.
  • Advocate for Title VI clients/families’ rights and entitlements as recipients of educational services and as persons eligible for educational services. Provide support and assistance to families as a family advocate by attending various meetings in educational settings (parent-teacher conferences, etc.).
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of educational activities for the Pokagon community.
  • Collect Title VI student data; grades, attendance, and test scores for departmental purposes to assess students’ academic strengths and areas for improvement and to track student progress.
  • Collaborate with local educational representatives to identify available resources to utilize within the Tribal community to ensure Citizens’ educational needs and goals are met.
  • Assist with enrichment programs including the Summer Enrichment programs, camp, after schools,etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the position.
  • Maintain reporting for Indian Education grant; process reports for the Project Director, as needed.
  • Maintain student reports for Title VI students.
  • Visit Title VI schools each academic year.
  • Assist Title VI students with accessing applicable tribal government resources.
  • Maintain log and payouts for Title VI Ed. Releases.
  • Maintain Title VI Budget
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of the grant objectives, sercies, and activities.
  • Attend Tribal Education meetings with other tribes
  • Serve as a liaison between the TEAs, LEAs, and TEAs, and the tribes.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Equipment

  • Standard office equipment.
  • Systems used: MS Office Applications and Internet.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited institution whose program of study has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education is required.
  • Minimum of (5) years’ experience working with PreK-12th grade required.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications is required.
  • Strong delivery of positive service and excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to speak effectively before groups and respond to questions effectively.
  • Ability to alleviate stress and anxiety and be supportive of youth and families and work tactfully, collaboratively, diplomatically and with highest level of confidentiality with educational and academic needs.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes hours necessary to accommodate educational programs that could include weekends and overnight when needed.
  • Experience working with Native American communities preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

  • Pokagon Band Preference Code applies.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature and will frequently require sitting, however standing and walking will occasionally be necessary.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment.
  • Frequently required to talk and hear.

Work Environment

  • General office and classroom/public environment. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, classroom, or other public location with standard office equipment available.
  • Local travel is necessary, so the ability to travel as needed is required.
