POLITICO is seeking a Systems Engineering Manager with the dedication and drive to implement positive change. You will be responsible for leading a team that supports highly available infrastructure in a cloud-centric environment while recommending and implementing strategic initiatives. In this position, you will work hand in hand with various teams across the Technology department including Development, Network Engineering, and Cybersecurity. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and people management to ensure the successful delivery of projects and the growth of the engineering team. What You'll Do:
- Lead and mentor a high-performing systems engineering team
- Resolve technical challenges and provide guidance on system architecture and design
- Establish and enforce best practices around security, scalability, and reliability within both your team and software development teams
- Drive the implementation of various infrastructure projects related to department initiatives
- Design and build infrastructure systems and architecture using (including but not limited to) AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform
- Collaborate with global teams to align and unify technology stacks in the US and EU, ensuring consistency, interoperability, and compliance
- Develop comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure the rapid restoration of critical systems in the event of a disruption
- Lead and oversee security and compliance audits of systems infrastructure
What You'll Need:
- 7 years of experience in systems engineering, with at least 2 years in a managerial or team lead role
- Extensive experience in architecting, implementing, and supporting advanced solutions on AWS, including strategic decision-making and cross-team collaboration
- Demonstrated expertise in overseeing and maintaining Kubernetes environments for 2 years, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security
- Comprehensive knowledge of AWS best practices, including security, scalability, cost optimization, and operational excellence, with experience in designing and maintaining well-architected solutions
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including team members, stakeholders, and leadership
Nice to Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, etc.)
- Possession of an AWS Certification
- Knowledge of advanced security protocols and their implementation in enterprise environments, such as zero-trust architecture or identity and access management (IAM) best practices
- Experience in leading teams through the successful pursuit and attainment of industry-standard certifications, such as SOC 2 or StateRAMP
- Familiarity with content delivery networks
