The purpose of the staff MLS position is to perform procedures in all sections of the laboratory when working weekends or alone. May be assigned special duties in addition to staff MLS duties, and assume responsibility of a section when the supervisor is absent.
This position requires a highly trained, specialized individual who has the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations. The staff MLS works closely with patients including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric age groups, the Pathologist, office staff, physicians, nursing service, and other laboratory and hospital personnel. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The incumbent has access to sensitive, confidential information and must be able to maintain those confidences. The incumbent establishes the work procedures and priorities within imposed deadlines.

Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.
- Education/Special Skills: A Bachelor of Science degree including an internship under the direction of a Pathologist in an approved laboratory.
- Must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (i.e., ASCP or AMT). (If not currently registered, must pass the registry within the first twelve months of employment.) Must maintain approved certification status. Certification renewal must be verified as active 2 months from valid through date.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to follow detailed blood collection and lab procedures. Ability to assist in the research and development of new lab procedures as required by pathologist and technical supervisor.
MLT - High school diploma or equivalent level of education preferred, two years associated science degree or equivalent, prefer laboratory training culminating in National Certification, MLT (ASCP or equivalent). Ability to communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to use a computer. Ability to follow detailed blood collection and lab procedures and train for new procedures as needed. Requires the ability to: perform at an independent level with minimal direction; exercise good judgement and initiative; problem solve, and make decisions in a variety of situations.
