Job Title: Fiber Field Technician
Department: PIE&G Connect
Reports To: Broadband Operations
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
SUMMARY
The Fiber Field Technician’s primary function is to install and troubleshoot PIE&G Connect’s high performing fiber optic internet, and voice products throughout our community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Leveraging past skills, become an expert on the PIE&G Connect Calix in-home equipment installation through training and hands-on experience.
- Configure Internet and VoIP Services, as defined on Service Orders.
- Download the PIE&G Calix mobile application and demonstrate the functionality of the PIE&G broadband mobile app features.
- Install in-home and business broadband service per the standards.
- When required, install, repair, or maintain fiber connection from the Fiber TAP on a pole or underground pedestal, to NID on the outside of the home.
- Collaborate with the Broadband Network Engineer, as requested.
- Be on-call after hours and weekends to support issues that cannot be addressed by the contractors.
- Build and maintain good rapport and a cooperative relationship with subscribers and co-workers while taking ownership of responsibilities and being accountable for his/her own actions.
- Look for ways the support team can continuously improve.
- Performing all other duties and responsibilities assigned
QUALIFICATIONS

- Working experience with Ethernet networks, including in-home installation and configuration
- Understanding of IP networking (DNS, IP Addressing, DHCP).
- Working experience with Wi-Fi
- Working experience with voice services preferred.
- Working experience with fiber optic and CAT6 cabling
- Working experience completing tasks using a trouble ticket system
- Ability to learn new technology and equipment operations.
- Excellent Customer Service and troubleshooting skills.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- An associate degree in computer programming, telecommunications, or a related field, OR equivalent experience (High School Diploma required).
- In-home broadband service installation experience, preferably FTTH, utilizing Calix equipment.
- Fiber Optics Training Courses and Certifications a plus.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's license.
