What are the responsibilities and job description for the Caseworker - Overflow Shelter (3rd Shift/Part Time) position at Project NOW, Inc.?
SUMMARY: The Shelter Caseworker maintains the safety, security, and dignity of the shelter and the guests who stay there. They provide information and referrals to shelter guests, collect and record data, and distribute hygiene items to shelter guests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Maintain vigilance overnight to ensure the safety and security of the shelter and clients.
- Deescalate conflict if it arises.
- Interact with individuals and families in crisis with a spirit of kindness, dignity, and compassion.
- Collect and record accurate data for program outcomes and statistical reports.
- Manage donated item inventory and distribute to shelter guests according to their needs.
- Conduct assessments to determine the current level of need in various life skill areas or the need for additional specialized services.
- Provide information and referrals and collaborate with service providers to address barriers to securing and maintaining housing.
- Form trusting relationships with individuals and families to help them acquire and maintain housing.
- Assist the individuals and families in identifying options and alternatives, setting goals, and becoming self-sufficient.
- Provide a written summary of the events of the evening to supervisors.
- Provide minor cleaning to ensure the functionality of the shelter.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of resources for people who experience homelessness.
- Must be detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, 10-key and other office equipment.
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and implement Project NOW Overflow Shelter Policies & Procedures.
- Ability to write reports, and business correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to maintain composure during emotionally escalated situations.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree (A. A.) or technical training preferred.
- First aid and CPR training preferred.
- Six months to one-year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk or hear, and frequently is required to stand, carry items such as laptops and paperwork to and from each site, walk, and sit in situations where it relates to addressing clients’ needs. Climbing stairs and lifting up to 25 lbs. is required. The noise level in the primary work environment is usually quiet as associated with the office environment. Must be able to maintain alertness overnight. The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using alcohol or drugs, and who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health, and safety practices. The employee may experience unpleasant sensory demands associated with these behaviors. The employee must be able to respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations, including crisis and potentially hostile situations.
