Associate Manager, Biology

The Associate Manager, Biology is responsible for planning and performing scientific experiments that contribute to PTC’s research and drug discovery activities. This position assists in the conduct of early-stage research, the goal of which is the identification of New Chemical Entities (NCEs). The incumbent is also responsible for documenting experimental results and communicating them to their supervisor and the project team. The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC’s discovery science project teams.

The Associate Manager, Biology supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.

• With guidance from the advisor plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s). This includes performing analyses of primary research literature.
• Applies relevant scientific principles and techniques to research problems.
• Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and techniques.
• Provides support for high throughput screening including the design of primary assays, the goal of which is the identification of additional hits and new chemical scaffolds.
• Provides support for lead optimization by screening compounds and/or supporting structure activity relationship (SAR) studies involving the characterization of the biological activity of compounds in various assays. Profiles selected compounds in additional cells/assays.
• Provides support for in vivo studies as required.
• Assists in the development of biologically relevant alternatives to preclinical animal models.
• Conducts mechanism of drug activity (MOA) studies.
• Presents findings internally to cross-functional teams and contributes to the publication of the work of the project team in well-established and peer reviewed journals, subject to internal scientific and legal approval.
• Contributes to the development of patent applications as appropriate.
• Complies with all safety requirements and company regulations.
• Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.
• Performs other tasks as assigned.
• Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of candidates.
• May provide technical and scientific input to the project team or research leadership.
• Abides by all safety requirements.
• Contributes to general lab needs such as:
  • Equipment maintenance.
  • Identification of capital equipment needs.
  • Maintenance of clean and uncluttered work areas.
  • Maintain inventory and order lab supplies as needed.
  • Troubleshoot.

• Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a scientific discipline (preferably Molecular Biology or Biochemistry) with a minimum of 5 years of Industry experience.

• Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.

• Experienced in human cell culture methodologies, including maintaining cells, scaling up cell culture for screening, and plating cells in 96-well plates.
• Experienced in working with RNA, including RNA purification and qPCR.
• Knowledge of and ability to use standard molecular and cell biology techniques. Experienced in using automated pipetting systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
• Demonstrated ability to work meticulously and diligently.
• Effective planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
• Demonstrate ability to work on complex problems to produce experimental data across one or more projects.
• Demonstrates ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed, multi-disciplinary team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
• Exercises independent judgement within defined procedures and practices.
• Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and the ability to collaborate with others on cross functional teams in a fast-paced, matrixed, environment consisting of internal and external team members.
