About The Role

Raise the Future’s CFO is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team within the organization. The CFO will oversee all Raise the Future’s finance work and will help us continue to grow through sound management of our financial resources and wise financial and budgetary planning.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Decision Making

  • Deeply understands the organization's current and future business model and is a strong business partner and collaborator with programs and operations leaders in key decisions and planning. Provides financial information and insight in support of consistent data-driven decision making throughout the organization.
  • Monitors financial performance and proactively anticipates future financial and related operational issues and addresses them with the CEO and leadership team. Ensures that comprehensive systems are in place for monitoring and growing the financial resources of the organization.
  • Creates and monitors financial plans for program services, such as modeling for potential new or expanded programs, new partnerships, and other initiatives. Prepares financial analysis and cost-benefit analysis to support Raise the Future’s long-range planning.
  • Directs all operating and capital budgeting processes as well as financial planning, reporting, and forecasting. Partners with program and development leaders to set appropriate revenue and expense goals to achieve the organization's overall strategic goals.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Lead and mentor the Finance team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability and continuous learning.
  • Sets short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the Finance team, aligned to Raise the Future’s priorities.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, cultivates and nurtures strong relationships throughout the organization and with Raise the Future partners.
  • Actively works to promote an inclusive, positive culture that brings to life Raise the Future's organizational values.
  • Current supervisory responsibilities include managing a team of four.

Constructing Sustainable Financial Structures

  • Oversees payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, account reconciliations, and grants accounting processes.
  • Formulates and recommends policies on banking, receipt, and disbursement of funds, extension of credit, and all cash flow matters. Oversees cash management and investments.
  • Ensures that effective internal controls are in place to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all regulatory requirements.
  • Leads annual audit preparations and manages ongoing relationships with auditors to ensure compliance with all regulatory and GAAP requirements. Oversees the preparation of the audited financial statements, Form 990 tax return, and other regulatory filings. Coordinates the selection of the external audit firm.
  • Files all reports necessary to comply with laws and regulations for reporting and audits of recipients of public funds.
  • Oversees and provides financial analysis of all insurance contracts including annual renewals and selection of vendors, with a focus on liability insurance.
  • Oversees Medicaid and other clinical services billing processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and maximizing reimbursement efficiency.
  • Implements process improvement and automation of critical financial processes. Maximizes the capabilities and reporting of the financial ERP system (Microsoft Dynamics 365) and alignment with financial information in our donor management system (currently: Raiser’s Edge)

Accountability and Transparency

  • Acts as a liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance Committees. Prepares committee agendas and effectively presents financial information and addresses all directors' questions. Fosters good relationships with Board Chair, Treasurer, and other Finance Committee members.
  • Works with communications to ensure strategic presentation and transparency of financials with grantors, donors and other interested parties.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications of Position

  • CPA and/or Master’s-level degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field or commensurate professional experience
  • Ten years of progressive, professional finance/accounting experience
  • Minimum of seven years of management experience in accounting/finance
  • Proven experience managing staff, outside vendors, budgeting, audits, financial analysis, and planning

Preferred Qualifications of Position

  • Nonprofit business experience, including contributing to strategy development within a non-profit organization
  • Experience in the application, billing, and reporting for government grants and contracts (county, state, and federal grants)
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software/systems, including experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365/Business Central and Raiser’s Edge
  • Experience with Medicaid and other clinical services billing processes, including regulatory compliance and reimbursement optimization


Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills and the ability to collaborate and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to partner with a leadership team to formulate, develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to achieve an organization’s vision, mission, and goals.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to communicate financial information to those who do not have a financial background.
  • Prior experience working with a Board of Directors preferred.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data, propose viable solutions, and design necessary plans, processes, and systems.
  • Ability to evaluate systems for efficiency and implement improvements.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting, auditing, taxes, and financial reporting.
  • In-depth knowledge of internal controls.
  • Experience with large federal and state non-profit grants and contracts.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and adhere to deadlines.
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical skills and sound judgment.
  • Excellent critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This position primarily works in a typical office environment, mostly indoor office environment with windows, with office equipment noise and the possibility of interruptions with questions from staff or other office matters. This position also may be required to meet with grantors, donors, partners, vendors, and others in professional and social settings outside the office. Considerable time is spent sitting at a desk using a computer terminal, telephone, and attending meetings with others.

Salary Range: $140,000 - 170,000
