What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Truck Operator position at Ranger Construction?
Summary:
The Service Truck Driver is responsible for preparing, maintaining and safely driving the Fuel Truck to various work sites to fuel, service, grease, oil, add lubricants, and perform other mechanical tasks to machinery and equipment used on road construction projects. A CDL and Hazardous Materials endorsement must always be maintained.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Primary function is to prepare, load and deliver fuel products to designated road construction job sites based on daily needs.
- Prior to daily start of work, perform the following:
- CDL walk-around inspection of the physical condition of Fuel Truck for damage, wear or any defect that may affect productivity and/or safety; record results and submit checklist to supervisor.
- Check/maintain all fuel, oil, water and coolant levels, belts, brakes, drive components, alarms, lights, gauges, etc.
- Inspect tires and tire pressure.
- Report deficiencies and work with mechanic when needed to fix issues.
- On arrival at job site, fuel equipment, perform preventative maintenance, grease all points as designated.
- Coordinate equipment service hours with maintenance schedule; document all services performed; document fuel dispensed to the specific equipment.
- Assist with maintaining fuel site and monitor inventory.
- Respond to fuel emergencies as needed.
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task; properly follow all Company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or its equivalent preferred.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at a rating of “A” or “B” and a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement with a driving record that meets Company standards.
- Knowledge of paving equipment operation and job tasks.
- Sufficient mechanical/equipment knowledge to identify minor problems and fix them and the ability to effectively communicate with supervisor or mechanic about other equipment issues that require repair.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; function effectively as part of a team; ability to work under pressure; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Mechanical aptitude is desirable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, push, pull, climb, bend, and stoop. The employee frequently is required to drive, (for up to 8 eight hours), walk (occasionally on rough terrain/in varying weather conditions), climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, computer screens, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment and the movement of mobile equipment.
