DESCRIPTION
Provides maintenance repair of drinking water assets (water mains, hydrants, service lines, etc.). Successful candidate must be able to work basic hand tools and various outdoor conditions. Communicates well with both internal and external stakeholders. Available for overtime and afterhours emergency work. Safety and repair training will be provided. Applicant is required to provide their own steel-toed footwear in addition to work clothing suitable for outdoor conditions The company may issue uniforms that must be returned. Preference will be given to individuals with previous experience operating a backhoe / excavator.
Safely and efficiently operates light, medium, or heavy equipment and power tools to perform a series of skilled / manual activities and tasks and / or to transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. The Equipment Technician may be cross trained to work in one or more areas as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES : Operates light, medium, or heavy equipment; operates trucks to transport personnel, equipment, refuse and / or materials to and from work sites. Operates power tools, uses hand tools and performs a variety of skilled / manual tasks and activities, i.e. spraying, landscape, moving furniture, roofing, painting, infrastructure repairs, mowing, pouring concrete or asphalt, fabricating and installing traffic signs, installing pavement markings, repairing traffic signal infrastructure, etc. May assist with the cleaning and repair of sewer mains. Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observes and follows all safety procedures and precautions in the operation of equipment / tools at worksite. May investigate and respond to complaints from the public. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and / or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools utilizing a data tracking system. May act as a lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel. May perform other duties as assigned.
COMPLEXITY
Work consists of routine standard procedures and tasks where simple analytical ability is required to select and execute actions.
IMPACT OF ACTIONS
Errors in work cause some expense and inconvenience. Work is typically performed under moderate supervision and within standard operating procedures. The incumbent occasionally can function autonomously, with the supervisor available to answer questions as they arise.
KNOWLEDGE :
Requires a high school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and / or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment.
EXPERIENCE :
Six months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required.
License : Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License and must be in compliance with the city policy AP2-2 on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate.
PHYSICAL EFFORT :
The position requires stooping, bending and / or lifting of items of 30-80 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This is a Tier I position and may require responding to emergency calls and working longer shifts including sleeping in the facility during an emergency.
PHYSICAL SKILL :
Requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to quickly changing external stimuli.
