POSITION SUMMARY: 

The BMT Patient Navigator is a critical role within NMDP, responsible for providing comprehensive financial support to patients diagnosed with a blood cancer or other transplantable disease. This position involves identifying and implementing a financial advocacy program to address financial barriers to treatment, supporting patients in overcoming these barriers, and advocating for adequate coverage. This is a remote position (US).  #LI-Remote

ACCOUNTABILITIES:  

Build a sustainable financial advocacy program:

  • Create a process for obtaining up-to-date knowledge of requirements for enrolling patients in:
    • Health insurance (eg, Medicaid, Marketplace)
    • Manufacturer, state, and local medication assistance programs
    • Disease-specific assistance programs from nonprofit, independent foundations
    • Medicare prescription benefits
    • Medicare Low-Income Subsidy and any federal, state, and local benefits (eg, unemployment benefits, disability benefits). 
  • Create processes for identifying and developing relationships with contacts at important organizations to become familiar with available resources, policies, and procedures for working with them, including, but not limited to:
    • In-network insurance plans
    • Local pharmacies, including specialty pharmacies 
    • Local diagnostic service companies
    • Local non-profit organizations and independent foundations
    • External patient advocacy groups and community-based organizations that offer education, direct assistance, navigation, and/or other services. 
  • Build a process for making referrals to legal service organizations to assist patients with legal issues that arise after a cancer diagnosis (eg, employment, disability benefits, housing, consumer rights, estate planning, medical decision-making).
  • Build a comprehensive intake process for patients at risk for financial toxicity. 
    • Connects with patient’s directly to navigate potential solutions and interventions for financial barriers before and after transplant.
    • Develops and provides patient education on existing insurance, or ways to access coverage and where to apply.
    • Provides emotional support, working closely with others in patient services and partner organizations.
    • Builds and maintains a database of external financial resources and assists patients in applying.
    • Identifies required data points for intake process.
    • Conducts environmental scans for existing financial supports and programming.
  • Collaborates across teams to identify key performance indicator’s (KPI’s) to manage and evaluate program performance, track patient outcomes, and provide data-driven recommendations.
    • Meticulously capture insights on financial and insurance barriers to inform future organizational strategy and investment
  • Serves as an internal consultant for NMDP billing practices that align with insurance billing processes
  • Collaborates effectively with transplant center staff and internal cross-functional teams, including Patient Services, Case Management, field-based provider-facing teams, and Government Affairs.
  • Implements tools to increase access to patients’ insurance benefits. NPI is key for this to work. 
  •  Leverages existing technology, including Salesforce, Looker, Case Management Application, and Good Grants to drive efficiencies in connecting patients to financial programs. 
  • Builds partnerships with organizations that understand SSDI, SSI, FML

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Patient financial barriers and social drivers of health.
  • Knowledge of health care administration, public health, financial navigation, or case management.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance coverage and patient navigation for transplant-related coverage and financial preparation.
  • Strong knowledge in BMT insurance coverage (Commercial/State/Federal programs).
  • SSDI/SSI/Medicaid.
  • FMLA and short and long-term disability.
  • Debt management practices, healthcare payment plans, and medical billing practices to provide holistic financial advice.
  • Pharmaceutical assistance programs: Expertise in securing medication coverage through patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.
  • Financial assistance programs and opportunities.
  • Insurance and financial assistance for international patients seeking transplants in the U.S.

 

Ability to: 

  • Guide patients in accessing transplant within their insurance network,
  • Help patients apply for assistance
  • Work with patients from diverse backgrounds to address financial concerns that may be compounded by socioeconomic or cultural factors.
  • Build relationships across disciplines.
  • Work with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical, and billing staff.
  • Employ strong patient assessment skills.
  • Offer bilingual services to patients in English and Spanish

 

Education and/or experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, public health, social work, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in oncology focused care.
  • Experience in navigating grants and charitable programs.
  • Experience in implementing new programs and developing processes. 
  • Strong experience in leveraging existing products and implementation of new technologies.
  • Uninsured or underinsured patients
  • Patients coming from overseas for treatment

 

Preferred qualifications: (Additional qualifications that may make a person even more effective in the role, but are not required for consideration)

  • Certification in healthcare financial management or patient advocacy.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or healthcare organization.
  • Experience working with government assistance programs (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, SSDI, SSI).
  • Knowledge of foundations and non-profit patient assistance programs.
