Job Summary

Rhythm Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a International Controller who will be responsible for the management of accounting and reporting, internal controls and tax compliance for the international Region business. This position will report to the Chief Accounting Officer, with a dotted line to the Head of Finance & Commercial Operations, International Region and work closely with the International senior management team and the corporate finance Team based in Boston..

As an International Controller, the ideal candidate will work with the International management team and Corporate Accounting and Finance teams to ensure standard accounting policies and practices are applied and manage the financial accounting, tax and internal control compliance at the international subsidiaries. This person should have significant knowledge and expertise in working in international setting, in a high growth environment where many policies and procedures to support the business will evolve and be further defined as businesses come online and mature.

Rhythm values the face-to-face interactions we have while in the office and currently operates in a hybrid work model for Boston-based roles.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Direct oversight of all transactional accounting activities for Rhythm’s subsidiaries located in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. This individual will also oversee the International Region activities where Rhythm is present and not have, at least for the moment, subsidiaries. 
  • In close collaboration with CAO and VP International Finance, develop and oversee shared service functions supporting Purchase-to-Pay, Order-to-cash, and record-to-report in key international jurisdictions, balancing internal human resources and outside service providers 
  • Verify accuracy and completeness of [country-level statutory and US GAAP] financial statements and supplementary reporting information with accounting procedures and controls and through balance sheet reviews 
  • Design, implement, and monitor, processes, controls and systems for international locations 
  • Develop and optimize indirect tax compliance and management capabilities 
  • Partner with the international management team to help drive growth, enabling robust infrastructure support across a broad range of accounting and finance related matters 
  • Develop and maintain procedures for an effective internal control environment over international operations. 
  • Manage external SOX, Tax and external audit firm for related work 
  • Help establish international subsidiaries (when necessary) and maintain local compliance, tax and accounting support with our 3rd party vendor RSM
  • Assist in overseeing 3PL order to cash vendor Movionto. Maintain process and control over credit limits for international market 
  • Establish inventory controls and conduct inventories when it becomes material
  • Work closely with Human Resources on administration of country level benefits and HR outsourced partner Vistra 
  • Assist with monthly revenue calculations for international markets 
  • Perform monthly and quarterly closing activities for international locations with the support of RSM and Corporate Assistant controller 
  • Perform, on request, other related business support/accounting finance duties
  • Provide effective leadership of personnel to achieve corporate objectives, department goals, maintain desired corporate culture and philosophy and adhere to company policies. 
  • Management of direct reports, when applicable; this includes selection, training development, performance feedback and yearly written performance evaluations.
  • Exercise sound data stewardship following data policies (retention, privacy, security)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in accounting, and CPA license or equivalent (Chartered Accountant)
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience with a minimum of 4 years supporting international operations 
  • Experience with Pharmaceutical Industry / Biotech required
  • Able to speak different European languages (on top of English) preferred (French, German, Italian or Spanish) 
  • Experience with transfer pricing, VAT reporting and compliance 
  • Well versed in current GAAP accounting, especially related to revenue recognition and foreign currency, income taxes, internal controls 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft D365 general ledger system 
  • Exceptional organizational, prioritization, decision making, and planning skills as the candidate will need the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively to achieve the overall goals of department and company 
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, multi-task efficiently and manage individuals 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, to be able to identify and pro-actively propose system and process improvement 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, detail oriented, with high level of ethics and integrity 

This role is based out of our Netherlands office. Rhythm operates in a hybrid-work model. Candidates applying must be willing and able to be in the Netherlands office in coordination with their department and business needs.

This role will involve travel, per pandemic travel guidelines.
