Job Summary

The registered nurse provides assessment, care planning and direct delivery of treatment utilizing professional nursing care processes in a patient and family centered manner in accordance with licensure and regulatory scope and standards, and established hospital policies, procedures and protocols.

Core Responsibilities include:

  • Assess, develop, implement and perform a comprehensive plan of care involving the patient and the family.
  • Performs and documents direct patient and family centered care and patient education according to nursing standards of practice.
  • Identifies and responds to patient conditions to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Perform in the charge nurse role and will direct and delegate care provided by unlicensed team members.
  • Perform in the Stepdown Area nurse role as directed.
  • Respond to Full Trauma Activations in our Level III Trauma ED and assist with care per protocol, as well as float to Emergency Department and perform as directed.
  • Performs discharge planning to ensure safe and appropriate transition of care.
  • Perform in the charge nurse role and will direct and delegate care provided by unlicensed team members.
  • Provides world class customer service to patients and families.
  • A certified nurse in ICU can perform the following functions in the absence of a physician:

1.) Administer 02

2.) Start IV

3.) Administer drugs per ACLS protocol, CCU and hospital policy and procedure, excluding controlled substances.

4.) Perform procedures in accordance with ACLS protocols, i.e. CPR, defibrillation, cardioversion

5.) Use the temporary transcutaneous pacemaker.

The RN may also assist the physician with the insertion and care of a pacemaker as well as arterial line, including pulling back and discontinuing catheters as ordered as well as:

  • Operate EKG monitors at the central station and be able to distinguish rhythms and arrhythmias.
  • Administer and titrate IV medications as ordered to include Tridil, Nipride, Dobutrex, Dopamine, Lidocaine, Fentanyl, Pronestyl, Diprovan, Cardizem, Insulin, Levophed, Aggrastat, Amiodarone as well as other medication ordered such as Versed
  • Administer Thrombolytic agents under direct supervision of an MD
  • Extubate patients when ordered
  • Manage ventilated patients, ventilator settings as well as BIPAP and CPAP
  • Obtain 12 –lead EKG
  • Operate external as well as internal pacemaker as indicated
  • Assist MD with all approved procedures that may include cardioversion, bronchoscopy, pleural biopsy, intubations, central line placement, arterial line placement, thoracentesis or paracentesis.
  • Complete iSTAT testing

Additional Required Experience:

Required: Registered nurse with a minimum of 1-2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience. Recent charge nurse experience.

Preferred: Recent Critical Care experience and/or Progressive Care experience. National Certification in Critical Care Nursing (AACN) or National Certification in Progressive Care Nursing (PCCN). Work at least 37.5 hours a year in a critical care area, which may include ICU, Progressive Care, ER or PACU.
