General Statement of ResponsibilitiesResponsible for organizing and carrying out structured learning processes for students in the Human Services program and related courses, such as Psychology. Cooperate with other faculty in planning and developing curricula within the spectrum of the entire Social Sciences/Human Services program. Participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities, including student advising, ongoing professional development, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, program and course learning outcomes assessment, and community involvement.
Supervision Received
The dean, in consultation with the department chair, is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the Vice President of Instruction. The dean confers with the department chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
- Instructs students in Human Services and Psychology using culturally responsive, active learning approaches that engage and facilitate student learning. Examples of specific courses may include: Introduction to Human Services, Introduction to Practicum, Child Abuse, Counseling the Chemically Dependent Client, Group Counseling, Motivational Interviewing, Practicum Seminar, Interviewing Theory and Techniques, Psychology of Human Relations, and General Psychology.
- Adapt learning procedures to the online/distance learning environment, including web-based delivery, ensuring comparable quality of instruction, student-teacher interaction, and assessment with classroom-based courses.
- Provides academic advising and career planning assistance for students in the Human Services program and those who plan to pursue degrees in psychology-related fields. Maintains sufficient regularly scheduled office hours as needed.
- Participates in Human Services student application processes, including revision of application forms and procedures, conducting information sessions, screening and review of applicants, student interviewing, when necessary, orientation, tracking of student progress, and the ongoing professional development of Human Services students.
- Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
- Develops, communicates, and utilizes a student assessment process and instruments that are related to the stated course and program learning outcomes.
- Oversees student practicum field experiences including site visits.
- Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
- Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed.
- Serves as a member of two or more college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
- Participates in the development of the quarterly class schedule and the annual departmental budget; initiates purchase requisitions, travel requests, and work orders as needed.
- Engages in regular professional growth activity to stay current in the fields of Psychology and Human Services and in best practices for teaching and learning based on the objectives established in an approved professional growth plan. This could include attending Human Services conferences and utilizing best practices for teaching and learning.
- Represents the program and the College to the community, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
- Engages with workforce partners on the Human Services Advisory Committee. Updates curriculum in accordance with changing workforce needs.
- Represents the department at Oregon Coalition of Addiction Studies Educators meetings, as well as other related meetings.
- Maintain regular and responsive communication with students, the department, and the college.
- Responsible for departmental equipment, participates in periodic inventory, and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: A master’s degree or higher in psychology or human services-related discipline is required, with coursework in two or more of the following areas: psychology, substance abuse, counseling, social work, or human services.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
Experience A minimum of one year teaching experience in one or more of the following: psychology, human services, addiction studies, counseling, public health, social work, sociology, behavioral science, community health, gerontology or family studies is required. A minimum of two years of clinical experience is required, with at least some of that experience in the substance abuse field.
Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Experience teaching in a community college setting is preferred.
Licenses: Professional certification or licensure or equivalent, such as LPC, NBCC, CADC I, LCSW, or MAC, is preferred.
For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
Knowledge of: Current trends in human services and psychology; computer applications for communication and learning, including, word processing, networks, the internet, spreadsheets, and multi-media presentations; curriculum development; the contemporary community college mission, its role in higher education, and its diverse student population; the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; best practices for online teaching and learning; Blackboard or other learning management systems, best practices for culturally responsive teaching including lecture, group activity, discussion, online and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment. May also be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings or traveling between counties.

This is a Full-Time Faculty position (100%, 10 months/year) in the Social Science Department. Starting compensation will be in accordance with initial step placement per the current Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and the 2024-25 Full-Time Faculty salary schedule.
