What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mobile Shear Operator position at SA Recycling?
SA Recycling, a industry leader in the metals recycling and processing industry, is actively looking for a diligent, reliable and talented individual to join our team as a Mobile Shear Operator. As a Shear Operator you will be responsible for operating and directing various pieces of heavy equipment such as an excavator with a shear attachment or a material handler (a wheeled hydraulic crane) with a grapple or a magnet to move and cut oversize scrap metal efficiently and safely.
This position will work outside in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
Working hours are from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities of a Mobile Shear Operator
- Operate mobile shear equipment to cut and process various types of scrap metal to specifications as determined by the customer.
- Inspect material to be sheared; verify that the processing can be carried out within the safe operating parameters of the equipment; and adjust equipment settings to shear material.
- Operate or direct several types of tracked and wheeled heavy equipment such as excavators and front-end loaders, and material handlers to move and sort materials for shearing purposes.
- Identify, sort, and separate recyclable materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, brass, etc., and separate and remove non-recyclable materials for disposal.
- Control and direct activities of others in the work area for safe rigging, cutting, loading and unloading, and the movement of material, vehicles, and foot traffic.
- Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance (fueling, lubricating, etc.) on equipment and report all unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Maintain a clean and orderly working environment.
- Ability to cross train on other types of heavy equipment to provide backup or help throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
- Follow all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures.
Qualifications of a Mobile Shear Operator
- High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience.
- 3 plus years’ experience operating heavy equipment such as a Volvo excavator with a shear attachment in the scrap metal or demolition industries.
- Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) a plus.
- Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
- Ability to learn new tasks as assigned required.
