Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student-centered pedagogy. Our community is committed to cultivating each student’s unique abilities and passions, and to facilitating opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers of the District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul of the Province of Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Position Summary :

The Assistant Principal for Student Life (APSL) has the primary responsibility for developing and leading a dynamic cocurricular program that advances the school’s mission, for planning and coordination of the annual operations of the school, and for assisting in the oversight of teaching and learning. These responsibilities require a strong working relationship with all other members of the school administration, the faculty, students, parents, and the community at large. The APSL reports directly to the Principal and serves as a member of the school administration.

Essential Duties, Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Mission :

Invests in and models the mission of SHC and the charisms of the Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers through active mission and Catholic formation;

  • Motivates, encourages and supports individuals and groups to animate the mission and philosophy of the school;
  • Coordinates Mission Formation Council that focuses on adult mission formation to ensure mission integration throughout the community.
  • Implements school policies and procedures that foster a cocurricular program that advances the school mission and philosophy.
  • Cocurricular Programming :
  • Oversees and coordinates all aspects of the cocurricular life of the school as essential components to its mission, celebrating student talents / gifts, and showcasing excellent programming within a competitive enrollment landscape.

  • Campus Ministry :
  • Oversees, supports, and evaluates all aspects of a vibrant Campus Ministry program that serves the students and adults within the SHC community through prayer, liturgy, service, retreats, and community building.

  • Ensures that Campus Ministry works in collaboration with the Theology Department and its members to provide a coherent, consistent approach to making the SHC mission alive and real in the lives of our community members.
  • Athletics :
  • Oversees, supports, and evaluates all aspects of an outstanding Athletics program that develops strong character within the student-athletes and competes at the highest level.

  • Performing Arts :
  • To develop, support, and evaluate the Performing Arts programs and directors.

  • To ensure the highest quality of education and performance by our Performing Arts programs.
  • Promote and plan for these performing art programs to do outreach, admissions programming, and support of schoolwide events.
  • Work with program directors to attract outstanding student performers to summer programs, winter clinics, and ultimately, enrollment into SHC.
  • Student Activities :
  • Oversees, supports, and evaluates all aspects of a robust Student Activities program that serves the students through student leadership programming (SBO and Block Club), spirit building activities, dances, rallies, and myriad other celebrations of the SHC community and its students.

  • Collaborates with Program Directors and the Deans of Students to develop, support, and evaluate the needs of the student leadership development program;
  • Oversees all clubs and Catholic Community Cohorts (CCCs) to ensure a vibrant program that serves various needs and interests in building an inclusive Catholic community of faith.
  • Supervises, supports, and evaluates the cocurricular program directors and programs.
  • Ensures the supervision, support, and evaluation of all coaches, moderators, and personnel within each cocurricular program area.
  • Oversees the budgets for all cocurricular programs;
  • Coordinates regular meetings with all cocurricular program directors (Cocurricular Council) to share best practices, build community, communicate policies and procedures;
  • Oversees and ensures a robust Graphic Journalism (Yearbook) program where a high quality yearbook is created each year that includes all senior portraits, represents the entire student community, and serves as an official and historical record of each school year.
  • Approves programs, activities, events, clubs and cohorts sponsored throughout all cocurricular programs;
  • Collaborates with the Deans of Students regarding supervision and student safety at all cocurricular events.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of policy regarding cocurricular eligibility and expectations.
  • School Operations and Administrative Duties :
  • Serves as an administrative officer for the faculty, staff and student body, maintaining an active presence throughout the school, especially on the DePaul Campus.

  • Active participant in Administrative Team meetings to promote the vision, philosophy, strategic plan, mission, and ISOs of the school;
  • Implements school policy with regard to student conduct and good citizenship;
  • Works collaboratively with the president, principal, the rest of the Administrative Team, and the Vice President for Finance and Business Operations in the development of the annual school budget;
  • Coordinates and oversees several events, including Frosh Orientation and New Family Welcome.
  • Assists with the coordination and supervision of all graduation activities (Senior Recognition Assembly, Baccalaureate Mass, Grad Night, and Commencement);
  • Performs public relations and may serve as principal designee as directed by the principal;
  • Personnel :
  • Works with other administrators to ensure communication and implementation of school policy and professional expectations of all school employees;

  • Works with the principal and administrative team to organize responsibilities for teacher supervision and professional development planning. This includes conducting teacher class observations and end of year summative evaluations.
  • Assists the principal on matters related to hiring and retention of personnel including but not limited to the appointment and dismissal of cocurricular personnel. Recommends to the principal on the appointment and dismissal of cocurricular personnel;
  • Provides support and oversight of staff who serve the cocurricular programs, the Irish Prep Shop, and the Production Manager.
