NOTE: Individuals recommended for hire in an Instructional Assistant position or any other position requiring State Board
for Educator Certification (SBEC) certification will be required to submit appropriate application/s and fees as determined
by SBEC to obtain certification.
Position Summary
Assist with the care and instruction of pre-school age children in activities designed to promote the social,
emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start students in a positive, safe, and supervised learning
environment.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Provide assigned instructional assistance and tasks under the general supervision of a certified teacher or
teaching team, including assistance with supervision of students, planning and delivery of instruction.
2. Assist with the physical care of children (toileting, meals, sanitation, etc).
3. Assist in the implementation of activities which foster the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical
development of children.
4. Assist with maintaining a safe, neat, and orderly classroom.
5. Help with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment, books, and supplies.
6. Assist with the supervision and monitoring of students throughout the school day inside and outside of
the classroom, including the cafeteria, playground, physical education classes, boarding and exiting the
bus, on community-based activities and other assigned activities.
7. Work cooperatively with teachers and staff to ensure safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate
mealtime experiences for children.
8. Work with parents/families as the primary educator in their child’s education.
9. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other required documents.
10. Attend and participate in faculty and Head Start program meetings as needed/required.
11. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected
for this position.
Minimum Requirements
- Must have one of the following educational requirements:
o A minimum of forty-eight (48) semester college hours from an accredited college or university.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional
passing score of 70% or higher or Treasuring Our Paraprofessionals certificate through Region XX (course
fees are the responsibility of the applicant)
- Eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification.
- Valid CDA (Child Development Associate) credential within 2 years of employment for the assignment.
- First Aid and CPR certified or ability to certify within 30 days of employment.
- Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee
(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
Preferred Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
