The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.
Role description
The Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH), Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department fulfills a critical role in providing nourishing and appropriate meals to residents and patients. The department is responsible for ensuring that residents’ nutritional needs are met by addressing medical requirements, personal preferences, and regulatory standards, all while fostering a positive dining experience and contributing to overall resident well-being.
Under administrative direction, the Assistant Food Service Director (0922 Manager I) will have primary responsibility for overseeing a broad range of functions including personnel management, regulatory compliance, budgeting, sustainability initiatives, menu planning, and community engagement to ensure high-quality food and nutrition services while meeting applicable state, federal, and local standards and regulations.
The Assistant Food Service Director (0922 Manager I) performs the following essential job functions:
Oversees and manages the operational activities of LHH FNS and supports the coordination of work among personnel, consultants, and contractors.
Develops and oversees strategic plans to enhance food and nutrition operations, including managing initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness.
Assists the executive management team in training food service staff, enforcing regulations such as Title 22 and other applicable state, federal, and local regulations, and ensuring compliance with CMS requirements.
Facilitates and coordinates budget development, monitors expenditures, and works toward sustainable and cost-effective food purchasing goals directed by the Board of Supervisors.
Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of FNS operations and service delivery, identifies and recommends alternative approaches or improvements, and implements revisions, adjustments, and changes.
Updates and maintains the HAACP Plan and standardized recipes according to USDA/FDA standards, ensuring food safety and compliance.
Collaborates with local producers and community partners to incorporate fresh, sustainably grown produce and products into menus, aligning with Good Food Purchasing Standards.
Serves as liaison to and coordinates with Human Resources, providing support during the hiring process as necessary.
The Assistant Food Service Director (0922 Manager I) may perform other duties as assigned/required.
How to qualify
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; AND
Experience : Three (3) years of professional experience overseeing food service operations in a hospital or large commercial kitchen facility.
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION : Additional qualifying experience as described above may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four (4) years. One year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units.
One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:
Possession of a valid Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CFPP) credential issued by the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professional’s Certifying Board for Dietary Managers
Possession of valid registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD)
Possession of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, Dietetics, Nutrition, or Food Service
Current ServSafe Certification
CA Driver's License
Two (2) years of experience supervising staff
Experience in Management of Culinary Arts and Kitchen Operations
