BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Functions as a custodial team leader to achieve excellence in building cleanliness and operational efficiency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
DAILY CLEANING TASKS (Including but not limited to):
- Sweep/mop/buff all corridor floors as needed.
- Clean all vestibules -- walls, floors, glass, etc.
- Sweep/mop commons area and concession area on a daily basis. Clean up spills and remove garbage.
- Clean faculty lounge and bathrooms.
DAILY NON-CLEANING TASKS (Including but not limited to):
- Unlock middle school doors in the morning.
- Raise the flag in the morning -- lower in afternoon.
- Sweep all storage rooms including mezzanine and mechanical rooms.
- Sweep outdoor sidewalks; pick up refuse from grounds.
- Wash/dry/fold towels. Clean lint filter before and after each and every load.
- Dust locker tops in all hallways.
OPERATIONAL TASKS (Including but not limited to):
- Set up/take down lunch tables as requested.
- Unload trucks and check in supplies
- Assemble equipment
- Transport equipment and supplies as requested.
- Haul trash to dumpsters
- Keep an inventory of supplies and assist in ordering supplies
- Assist in preparing facilities and fields for athletic or other special events
- Clean main walks and entrances of snow before school opens or other special events that are scheduled. Clever other walks and entrances as soon as possible thereafter. Sand where needed (See District Policy memo on “Snow Removal/Safety”).
- Replace towels, toilet paper, Kotex, tampons, etc. in all washrooms when necessary
- Inspect building on a regular basis for cleanliness and safety hazards.
- See that school grounds are properly cared for.
- Supervise work of all custodians and student workers at the middle school.
- As time permits, perform other cleaning and/or maintenance tasks that will help to keep the building looking attractive and operating smooth.
- Set up building for special events as requested by the principal or maintenance supervisor. If requested, cooperate with the custodial staffs at all schools (PhMS, PMS, PES, Pool); with the setting up and reorganizing before and after special events. If gymnasium bleachers are to be operated, see district policy #720.1. memo (2-8-99) on shutting off electrical power. You must remove all electrical power to bleacher tractor systems after the bleachers are moved in or out.
MAINTENANCE TASKS (Including but not limited to):
- Maintain boilers, water heaters, motors, fans and compressors. This work includes, but is not limited to, oiling motors, replacing filters, and checking belts.
- Repair or replace any broken school items as requested by the principal or maintenance supervisor.
- Do small building repairs such as repairs on doors, toilets, and drinking fountains.
- Assist maintenance supervisor in any maintenance task requested when necessary.
- Maintain playground equipment; perform weekly safety checks.
SUMMER TASKS (Including but not limited to):
- Paint district buildings as directed by maintenance supervisor.
- Supervise major cleaning projects at Phillips Middle School

- Supervise the custodial staff and participate in the major cleaning projects as directed by the maintenance supervisor or assistant maintenance supervisor.
- Strip and was hallway/classroom floors
- Strip and seal district gym floors as directed.
- Wash walls, light fixtures, blackboards, cabinets, and furniture.
- Clean floors, lockers, wash windows, and other miscellaneous cleaning duties.
- Transport supplies and equipment as directed.
- Haul mail as directed.
- Paint buildings and/or equipment as directed.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Custodian II & Summer Custodians
QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Be a person who seeks to enhance his/her technical and leadership skills by furthering their education through course offerings, seminars, or other effective means of learning.
ESSENTIAL APTITUDES, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Possess good human relations skills to effectively supervise the custodial staff, and work with the administration to achieve School District goals.
- Be a person who reports promptly for work, and does not hesitate in starting and completing assigned tasks.
- Be a person who seeks to enhance his/her technical and leadership skills by furthering their education through course offerings, seminars, or other effective means of learning.
- Be a person who willingly learns new tasks as assigned, and is alert to and takes care of non-assigned tasks as the need arises.
- Be a person who takes excellent care of School District equipment or property, and maintains high standards in the quality of all work performed.
- Be a person who follows the designated chain of command, and is able to take orders and accept constructive criticism.
- Be a person who has a positive attitude towards his/her job, and exhibits a positive attitude toward students, parents, visitors, and others.
- Be a person who maintains appropriate personal appearance and hygiene.
