What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production technician position at Science Museum of Minnesota?

The Graphic Production Technician is responsible for the production and installation of finished, large format, physical graphics for use in exhibits, marketing, and wayfinding.

This person works closely with other museum personnel to understand the physical graphic needs for a project, advise on best practices related to graphic production, and executes the physical work necessary to create and install final graphics.

Work with the graphic production manager to evaluate, organize, and coordinate the workload of graphics to be produced weekly.

Assist in the cost accounting of graphic production processes.

Advise graphic designers, exhibit project teams, and staff from other SMM divisions on appropriate graphic media and substrates for specific applications.

Prepare files supplied by other graphic designers for printing (known in the industry as preflight ). Check files for potential problems such as inconsistencies with placed photo images, file formats, font problems, layering problems and other factors that affect large format printing.

Produce final inkjet prints, vinyl lettering, and other graphic products.

Assemble finished graphics. Mount, laminate or overlaminate inkjet prints to substrates such as glass, PVC, foam board, and plywood.

Cut, weed, mask and install vinyl to walls, vehicles, and other substrates.

Job Duties and Responsibilities :

Work with exhibit developers and designers to compile completed files.

Assist with Graphic Design tasks as needed.

Be familiar with new developments in the field of graphic production for possible use in our area.

Attend team and project meetings as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Competencies

Professional experience in large format graphic production.

Must be self-motivated, able to work cooperatively with others, and be production oriented.

It is essential that the person in this position be able to work adeptly with the following software : Adobe Creative Suite, Onyx RIP, Google Suite

Familiarity with and / or willingness to train in CNC router and laser cutter graphic production methods, including OptiScout.

Familiarity with and / or willingness to train in the use of exhibit shop tools used in the creation of graphic substrates, including table saws and similar equipment.

Minimum Qualifications :

Education : No formal education required.

Experience : 2 years of graphic production and / or installation experience. Functional skills in Adobe Creative suite.

Experience working for a cultural institution is desired.

Work Environment : Graphic Production workshop and Exhibit Production workshop are the primary work locations for this position.

Installation work on the public museum floor is also required. Occasional travel to install graphics at client institution locations required, typically 1-3 times annually.

Salary for this role is $25.30 - $26.37
