DescriptionThe Museum Programs Educator with a K-12 student focus will work to fulfill the mission of the Kentucky Historical Society as well as help their colleagues throughout the organization succeed. The position plays an integral part on the Learning Team.
The Museum Programs Educator will develop programs dedicated to providing high-quality educational opportunities for students and teachers to understand and appreciate the use of Kentucky history to build critical thinking, problem-solving, and participatory skills to become engaged citizens.
With a focus on field trips and teacher resources, they will find innovative ways to ignite a student’s curiosity, while guided by the Academic Standards for Social Studies. They will work with members of the Learning Team to offer other museum programs such as public tours, museum experiences, and events at our three museum sites: the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, the Old State Capitol, and the Kentucky Military History Museum.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate experiences and programs for the K-12 student audience:
  • Handle day-to-day operations for the school groups during their field trips at our three museum sites, including providing museum introductions, guiding group tours, and leading activities such as Learning Labs.
  • Develop and evaluate educational programs that meet the Kentucky Academic Standards, inquiry-based learning practices, and trends in Museum Education.
  • Work with members of the Learning Team to implement state-wide programs or competitions and visits into the classroom, in-person and virtually.
  • Implement programs and resources delivered to K-12 teachers:
  • Provide resources for teachers to utilize in their Social Studies or History classes.
  • Work with the Teacher Resources Manager to offer professional development workshops, promote teacher resources at conferences, and other opportunities.
  • Support and assist in the implementation of educational partnerships with external organizations.
  • Coordinate KHS resources:
  • Coordinate logistics, purchasing, and other deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the KHS Marketing Team and outside partners to raise awareness of programs.
  • Work with other members of the KHS Learning Team to deliver public programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Teacher Resources Manager.

Minimum RequirementsEDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or related field
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two (2) years of professional experience in a museum, school, community center, or other history-related institution, preferably developing and conducting educational programs for school and public audiences.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Working knowledge of principles, initiatives, and standards influencing history education. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions
Must be able to remain stationary, sitting or standing, for long periods. Will travel frequently between the Kentucky Historical Society’s three museum site campus, all museums within a quarter- mile radius in downtown Frankfort. May occasionally be required to lift materials up to 25 pounds with assistance. This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday schedule during regular KHS operational hours, but must be able to work the occasional evening to provide for the needs of KHS in its programming and services for its museum and special event guests. The primary office for this position is located in the Thomas Clark Kentucky History Center in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. Must be willing to occasionally travel.
