The Recruit Paramedic is a certified and credentialed EMT or AEMT that has volunteered to attend an approved paramedic education program with the goal of successful certification as such upon completion. This position performs work duties at their current certification and pay such that they fulfill the obligations of the Paramedic Education Stipend Program Agreement.
Enrollment and attendance in accredited, Paramedic Education Program
Comply with the terms of Paramedic Education contract
Attend in person class sessions as outlined in Paramedic Program requirements
Attend scheduled hospital clinical and EMS pre-field internship experiences as required by Paramedic Program requirements.
During the Field Internship portion of Paramedic Program, work duties mirror the roles and responsibilities of a third person Paramedic student rider, as outlined in Paramedic Program requirements
Quality out of hospital health care
Provide basic life support and emergency care in accordance with both KBEMS regulations and Sedgwick County approved protocols
Establish a cohesive and productive working environment to enhance overall patient care
Maintain a safe work environment to minimize risk of injury
Determine most effective method of transport to and from health care facilities
Coordinate care with receiving facilities of situation in a timely manner
Provide verbal reports and transfers care to persons with equal or higher-level training
Documentation and Operational Readiness
Maintain accurate and complete electronic reports pertaining to patient care
Maintain accurate and complete Physician Certification Statement forms
Maintain accurate and complete vehicle maintenance, automobile condition, equipment condition, and facility condition electronic reports.
Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including HIPAA
Maintain readiness to respond to emergencies during an assigned shift
Maintain vehicle, equipment, and station activities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures
Notify immediate supervisor of any found deficiencies that impact normal operations
Respond to emergent/non-emergent calls in a safe manner minimizing risk to crew and public, with the exception of the Field Internship portion of Paramedic Program.
Notify appropriate personnel of the role, capabilities, and responsibilities of an EMT
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in, or accepted into paramedic school, AND have all pre-requisites completed. Employment as a full-time EMT or AEMT with SCEMS, or currently a part time employee in good standing who is willing to transition to full time status during the duration of this program and for 36 months post-graduation. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions. State of Kansas EMT Certification. Have no late/incomplete/overdue department assigned education. In good standing with no disciplinary action within the last year.
Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience as an EMT or AEMT. Associate degree in a related field.
