CHILDREN'S MUSIC DIRECTOR – Job Description
Sharon Presbyterian Church is seeking to hire a Children's Music Director for children ages 4 years old through 5th grade. We seek a candidate who has a background in music education, specifically with elementary aged children, has a strong love for children and can demonstrate the ability to work with children, their parents and volunteers. A description of the position, hours of employment, pay and expected qualifications follows.
Position Summary: The role of the Children’s Music Director is to plan, direct, and build the children’s music program offerings at Sharon Presbyterian Church by networking with families within and outside of the church in coordination with the Director of Music, Christian Education and the Head of Staff.
Current Position Status: Part-time position
Position Hours and Work Period: Averaging 6 hours per week for 9 months (the months of January through May and September through December)
Compensation: This position will be paid a total salary of $8,000 for the 9 month period
Position Functions:
- Plans and directs the SPC children’s choir
- Actively recruits new singers to the children’s choir within and outside of the church
- Prepares 4 - 6 musical offerings during Sunday morning worship during year
- Coordinates with the Director of Music and Christian Education committee to find most ideal time for rehearsals
- Leads music for Vacation Bible School in June
- Compiles and distributes recordings to families as needed
- Selects a varied repertoire of music that is faith based and consistent with Reformed Presbyterian theology
- Periodically attends services and church events to build and foster relationships with families and children
- Abides by the policies and procedures of the church, including those set forth in the Sharon Presbyterian Church Employee Handbook
- Notifies Director of Music (with as much advanced notice as possible) if a substitute is needed
- On Sundays: (1) Arrives early enough to arrange room and be ready to receive children by 10:45 a.m, (2) Plans to attend first few minutes of 10:30 worship service (through the Children’s Sermon) and escort children to room, and (3) Straightens room before leaving and should turn off lights and make sure that all windows and/or doors are closed and locked.
Position Qualifications:
- A degree in Music Education, Church Music, or related degree is preferred
- Experience working with elementary aged children is a plus
- Experience in choral conducting
- Is able to inspire, teach and mentor amateur musicians
- Demonstrated knowledge of and/or exhibited willingness to learn, Presbyterian theology, liturgical practice and use of music in worship
- Demonstrates good administrative, time management and communication skills
- Is comfortable with a broad range of musical styles
- Ability to work well with others and interact collegially with Director of Music, staff members, pastors and congregation leaders
- Must complete and pass SPC’s Safe Church Policy training, a background check, and be certified by SPC prior to service
- CPR and First Aid certification is a plus

Evaluation and Review:
- Meets monthly with the Director of Music to collaborate and discuss, brainstorm and initiate innovative ideas for the Children’s Music program
- An annual review will be given by the Director of Music
- The Children’s Music Director shall work under the supervision of the Director of Music in cooperation with the Worship Committee, with ultimate accountability to the Session
