Job Description:

PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Administrative Director of Imaging and Physical Therapy, Imaging Director, and in consultation with the Imaging Medical Director, the Lead Sonographer supervises the performance of general and vascular ultrasound exams. Must be knowledgeable in the area of patient requirements, especially safety and comfort. Is responsible for the assessment, treatment and care of patients, creating the work schedule, QC/QA programs and processes, education and training, ordering supplies, time card approval, evaluations, ensure regulatory agency compliance, and any other duties of daily operations at site(s) by organizing and prioritizing procedures and delegating specific duties to keep patient flow effective and in a timely manner. Must be competent to deliver care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Ensures that the sonographers demonstrate the ability to obtain quality images and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs. Possesses the knowledge of growth and development and have an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
The Lead Sonographer is responsible for being a role model of excellent customer service for the staff and other co-workers. S/he is expected to participate and/or lead Performance Improvement (PI) Projects. This position is a working Lead Sonographer position. Must maintain an environment of cohesiveness and teamwork.

Must be familiar with all types of ultrasound equipment and accessories used in the department. Supervises and schedules sonographers to assigned areas and ensures that they are responsible for the assessment, treatment, and care of patients and are competent to deliver care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Possesses the knowledge of growth and development, and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups. Must follow AIDET and accept reassignments and additional duties, when necessary, in a flexible and positive manner. May be assigned to work in other Imaging modalities. "

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

To perform this job successfully, must have completed a Sonography Training Program with a minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience, or have at least 3 years of clinical experience in Sonography.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be capable of dealing effectively and ethically with co-workers, physicians, and other Hospital personnel.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, one (1) year of General, OB, Breast, Large & Small Parts, Invasive Procedures, and Vascular experience preferred. ARDMS Physics certification required. ARDMS Certification in a minimum of one category (Abdomen, breast, vasular, OB, etc.) is required at time of hire or to be obtain within 6 months of hire date. RVT preferred. Must have completed a Sonography Training Program with a minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience, or have at least 3 years of clinical experience in Sonography. Must have and maintain current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care. Must have and maintain Trophon certification within 30 days of hire.



Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Indicates Essential Function

1 * Supervises the technical performance of all personnel in the Ultrasound Department to ensure high standards of quality and productivity. Is responsible for ensuring that all individuals in the department who are responsible for the assessment, treatment, and care of patients are competent to deliver care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Ensures that these individuals demonstrate the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs, possess the knowledge of growth and development, and have an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
2 * Acts as a resource individual for the sonographers in need of aid in regards to scanning techniques, positioning, equipment used, etc. Demonstrates and explains difficult or new techniques and procedures.
3 * Is responsible for the direction of sonographers and supporting personnel with regard to schedules and work assignments including call arrangements.
4 Collaborates with the Department Director or Manager in evaluations, counseling issues, recruitment, and/or promotions.
5 Designates and trains sonographers and meets with them on a regular basis. Submits reports of the meetings to the Imaging Director.
6 In consultation with the Administrative Director and Imaging Director, collaborates room utilization and cost-accounting methods and assists in the planning and preparation of budgets for operational activities.
7 * Ensures periodic equipment checks are made to measure accuracy in testing and performing exams.
8 Coordinates service and preventive maintenance of the equipment with floor function.
9 * Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Ultrasound and Meditech.
10 Performs procedures and coordinates appointments with the Radiologists and RN’s.
11 Handles administrative details incident to procurement and storage of supplies and equipment. Performs product evaluations as required. Maintains records and reports of these activities. Keeps abreast of new developments in ultrasound procedures, methods and equipment. Evaluates their applicability to departmental operations and makes recommendations to the Imaging Director.
12 Accepts reassignments and additional duties, when necessary, in a flexible and positive manner.
