What are the responsibilities and job description for the Postharvest R&D and Quality Assurance Technician position at Smithers-Oasis?
FLORALIFE®, a division of Smithers-Oasis, has an immediate opening for a Postharvest R&D and Quality Assurance Technician at our facility in Walterboro, South Carolina! FLORALIFE® is a world leader in the postharvest care and handling of flowers and provides product and technical services to customers on a global basis.
What We Need:
We are seeking a dynamic individual to conduct experiments in support of postharvest product development and assist in the quality assurance process and testing of FLORALIFE® products. This individual, by nature, must be innovative, have a strong work ethic, and be a team player. The technician's responsibilities will be split approximately 50% postharvest technician and 50% QA technician.
Some Essential Duties/Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
- Conducts and assists with flower testing experiments
- Conducts water testing, air testing, and customer audits
- Conducts R&D tests required for customer complaints
- Follows R&D experimental set up and data collection
- Writes necessary reports to document tests
- Assists sales and production personnel with technical matters
- Visits customer locations for technical services
- Maintains the lab supplies and chemicals required for experiments
- Conducts quality assurance tests
- Maintains all quality assurance data
- Evaluates SDS and COA for changes and validity
- Coordinates the disposal of hazardous materials
- Works closely with the QA manager on quality issues and improvements to help identify root causes and implement corrective actions
- Conducts product quality audits and inspections as needed
- Assists with all other areas as directed by management
Who We Are Looking For:
- An individual with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biology is preferred but not essential
- An individual with industry or academic experience in chemistry or biology field is preferred to understand the science behind the experiments
- An individual experienced in using Microsoft Office software
- An individual with good communication skills – both verbal and written

- This is an onsite position. Base work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Hours may need to be flexible as needed.
The pay range for this position is $24.15 to $27.30 per hour. Additionally, there is a 5% annual bonus potential.
