South Florida Business Journal is looking for a data reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a master at sourcing, organizing and analyzing data and has the journalism chops to build on our newsroom’s strong legacy of using data to drive original and insightful business coverage.
The data reporter must identify news trends affecting the Miami metropolitan area’s economy, and to communicate those trends through news reporting and visual storytelling techniques. The publication's weekly research rankings are a signature feature of the Business Journals and, under the direction of the data reporter, will be supplemented by stories and graphics to illustrate trends, highlight shifts in local research rankings and identify decisionmakers behind those changes.
The data reporter’s work begins with managing our proprietary database and research rankings, and it requires strong news judgement to identify and generate breaking news and enterprise reporting based on those findings. The data reporter is responsible for maintaining and growing that database, producing research rankings, directories and other research-based special publications. At full capacity, this position will be evenly divided between research responsibilities and news reporting.

Job Responsibilities
- Source, organize and analyze company and industry data for the SFBJ’s weekly research rankings, using surveys, public databases and other relevant sources.
- Produce news coverage and enterprise reporting derived from research, rankings and other data projects through traditional news reporting and visual storytelling techniques.
- Create, update and maintain database of all companies and sources to be surveyed for every research ranking. Database must be constantly updated.
- Oversees the creation of infographics to illustrate data findings, including supplementing other reporters' work.
- Supports newsroom news and enterprise projects that include or are driven by data.
- Participates with newsroom during Business Journal events.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Two-plus years or more as a journalist with a track record of finding stories in data and/or using data in stories.
- Highly organized: Able to juggle multiple projects to hit various deadlines.
- Self-motivated: Able to suggest and initiate new research projects — with guidance from editors — then contact sources to develop ideas.
- Attentive to detail: Create surveys with clear requirements for respondents. Able to follow local Business Journal and AP Style and production guidelines in support of SFBJ news reporting and research.
- Proven persistence and a willingness to engage with sources, data providers and employer representatives to identify and obtain information in support of research efforts.
- Expertise in Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheet software required. Prior experience in data management and sourcing data, including through public data sets, third-party vendors and direct surveys, a plus.
- Familiarity with federal, state and local public data sources a plus. Examples include the SEC, FDIC, Census Bureau, BLS, EMMA as well as municipal real estate and permitting sites.
- Familiarity with the Miami metro a plus.
- Proficient with MS Office Products
- Proficient with Web-Based Communication Platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
