What are the responsibilities and job description for the Career Coach (Part-Time) position at South Piedmont Community College (SPCC)?

The Career Coach is a part-time position (up to 27.5 hours per week). Under the direction of the Director of Secondary Education Partnerships, the Career Coach works on-site at local high schools within the college’s service area of Anson and Union County, as well as maintains regular travel to the college campus. During the summer months, the Career Coach will assist with advising and registration, conduct career workshops, information sessions, and assist with related activities.

Essential Duties Summary
  • In collaboration with SPCC and high school partners, develop and execute a plan for reaching students and families, including campus tours and information events at SPCC and in area schools.
  • Maintain a steady flow of communication via email, and phone calls with currently enrolled high school students as well as applicants in order to establish relationship with potential students.
  • Contact and meet with high school counselors and teachers to explain benefits of SPCC program offering and maintain SPCC materials at the service area high schools.
  • Work closely with the high school CTE department and Career Development Coordinator to develop opportunities for students to engage in career awareness and exploration
  • Participate in classroom visitations, career expos, college fairs, and other special events to discuss program options to potential students.
  • Administer career assessments and provide career advising to students through individual appointments, classroom presentations, and other activities
  • Assist high school students with the enrollment process, career options, orientation, registration, and ongoing retention.
  • Advise and register high school students in compliance with the North Carolina Career and College Promise regulations
  • Serve as a liaison to connect students and high school counselors’ to SPCC campus support resources to include, disability services, IT support, academic tutoring, etc.
  • Maintain a caseload of students at local high schools.
  • Communicate regularly with SPCC faculty to understand SPCC programs of study, industry specific credentials offered, and career opportunities in the field.
  • Collaborate with academic deans to identify innovative educational opportunities for students including summer enrichment programs.
  • Communicate with college officials concerning suggestions from prospective students along with business and industry suggestions for new courses or programs, or for updating current program/courses.
  • Document and maintain records of student advising sessions. Develop/maintain process to receive and enter applicant data and notify student of their acceptance into the college. Complete all documentation and reporting in compliance with the grant.
  • Participate in local and state Career Coach training and other professional development activities; remain current in knowledge of college programs, career opportunities, and the education and training required for various careers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One year of related work experience within the past five years. Related experience includes industry-related career development work experience in business, industry, or labor; or as a coordinator of work-based learning (job-shadowing, internships, cooperative education, apprenticeships); or a career/academic advisor; or in school counseling.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working within a high school setting.
  • Experience working with dually enrolled high school/ college students (i.e. Career and College Promise).
  • Experience working in a community college.
  • A minimum of two years full-time direct work experience in academic advising and/or career counseling.
