The South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) community includes 15 schools supporting 8,000 students in Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco.

The Role
SSFUSD is seeking dynamic, equity-focused, and inclusive counselors to join our school community. SSFUSD refuses to accept that the educational outcomes of students in our district are overwhelmingly predictable based on students’ race, socioeconomics, ethnicity or learning differences. We remain committed to working each day to examine systemic, institutional, and individual biases in order to dismantle systems of inequities that will enable all students to thrive.
As a counselor in SSFUSD, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working with staff, students, guidance counselors and school psychologists in providing resources, prevention and intervention services to students and families.
- Keeping confidential records on students in accordance with legal and professional requirements.
- Communicating and consulting with administrators, guidance counselors, staff, and parents/guardians on a discretionary basis (under guidelines of the confidentiality laws) to protect the needs, rights and concerns of students.
- Collaborating and consulting with administrators and staff to implement and monitor behavioral interventions.
- Participating in on-site activities such as: faculty meetings, counseling department meetings, IEPs, 504s, SAT, SSTs and staff development.
- Making referrals to inpatient/outpatient treatment programs, community agencies and mental health professionals.
- Providing individual and group mental health counseling to students; conferring as needed with parents, teachers, and others regarding student mental health needs.
- Providing specific services, including:
- Crisis Intervention, such as:
- Mandated Reporting
- Referring to mental health professionals and/or treatment programs
- Liaising with local law enforcement agencies
- Initiating 5150 assessments
- Participating in crisis response team meetings
- Providing homeless, runaway and foster youth services and support
- Short Term Counseling such as:
- Individual, family and group counseling
- Conflict resolution and mediations
- Additional duties as assigned

Requirements
- Education And Experience:
- Masters Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work with course work and/or experience in adolescent mental health and wellness
- Licenses And Other Requirements:
- Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPS) or candidate must be currently enrolled in a post-masters PPS program and have a (PPS) Intern Credential
- LMFT/LCSW/LPCC preferred or candidate must possess AMFT/ACSW/APCC number
- Knowledge of:
- Identification, assessment, intervention and referral relative to:
- Teenage depression and suicide
- Mental illness
- Substance abuse
- Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse
- Personal and family crisis situations
- Death, dying and grieving issues
- Adolescent issues
- Bullying prevention
- Gender and sexuality identity
- Other crisis intervention
- Trends and practices of the counseling profession.
- Potential barriers to educational progress and student wellness.
- Restorative justice practices
- Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, including mandated reporting.
- Ability to:
- Maintain accurate student records.
- Assemble, organize and prepare data for records.
- Operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working and cooperative relationships with others.
- Maintain appropriate daily, punctual attendance.
- Work under pressure, independently, with frequent interruptions and limited supervision.
- Utilize the District’s Student Information System to locate students, keep conference notes, review student progress, and access student and parent portals.
- Understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, faculty, administrators and staff.

- Proof of Pupil Personnel Services Credential or (PPS) Intern Credential and proof of enrollment in a post-masters PPS program.
- Proof of any additional credential, certificate, or authorization if applicable. (e.g. LMFT/LCSW/LPCC, AMFT/ACSW/APCC, etc.)
- Effective January 1, 2025: Under Education Code section 44939.5, you must provide a complete list of all prior employment with any Local Education Agency (LEA), including school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, or state special schools, including part-time and substitute roles.
Please note that if you are extended an offer from SSFUSD, you will also need to complete the following prior to beginning work, including training:
- Provide clearance of TB test, as mandated by California Education code.
- Submit fingerprints for California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation clearance.
