JOB SUMMARYPerforms duties for the Southport Fire Department related to fire prevention involving code enforcement and fire safety education and assists with fire suppression and training activities. Also oversees all ISO rating inspections, documentation, and paperwork. Employee is supervised by the Fire Marshal.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Inspects buildings and structures to identify potential fire hazards.Ensures buildings are equipped with fire control equipment including fire extinguishers.Locates fire code violations.Recommends actions to bring properties into compliance.Checks for accumulations of combustible material, electrical wiring problems, and inadequate or non-functional fire exits.Performs tests on fire protection systems.Ensures buildings are in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.Inspects properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations.Stays abreast of current fire safety codes and firefighting procedures.Evaluates evacuation procedures.Presents and explains fire code requirements and fire prevention information to engineers and construction workers.Issues and updates permits.Oversees ISO rating inspections, documentation, and paperwork.Conducts pre-fire plans.Schedules and conducts fire safety programs for all ages.Assists with departmental training program.Promotes fire safety among the department, employees, and citizens.Maintains appropriate computer databases and equipment.Establishes and maintains a filing system.Assists with the collection of Fire Inspection and permit fees.Participates in public education programs.Participates in the work of the Fire Investigation Unit and responds to emergency incidents.Completes fire investigation reports, determines origin and cause of fires, collects and preserves evidence, and provides testimony in legal proceedings.Performs related duties as required.
