POSITION SUMMARY/FUNCTION
Security Guard is responsible for the day-to-day security at the Crisis Center. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all patients, visitors and staff of the Crisis Center. This may include but is not limited to identifying potential threats and taking proactive measures to prevent harm to others, providing immediate support and intervention to individuals experiencing mental health crises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBLITIES/FUNCTIONS/TASKS:
1. Ensures the day to day security at the Crisis Center.
A. Control access to the facility by verifying identification, registering visitors, and enforcing visitor policies.
B. Conducts security check in procedures
C. Monitor surveillance systems and alarm systems, responding promptly to any alerts or incidents.
D. Conduct regular patrols of the facility, including all areas, entrances, and exits, to identify and address any potential security risks.
E. Responds promptly to crisis calls and walk-ins, providing immediate assistance and support to individuals in crisis.
F. Coordinate with local emergency services, law enforcement, and other community agencies to ensure appropriate and timely response to crises.
G. Collaborate with leadership to develop crisis intervention plans and ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in crisis.
H. Participate in ongoing training and development to enhance crisis intervention skills and knowledge of mental health disorders.
I. Maintain a visible presence and monitor activities within the facility to prevent unauthorized access, disturbances, or security breaches.
J. Respond to emergencies, including medical emergencies, disturbances, or aggressive behavior, following established protocols and procedures.
K. Collaborate with staff to address any security concerns, including managing challenging behaviors and de-escalating conflicts.
L. Complete incident reports and maintain accurate records of any security-related incidents or activities.
M. Provide support during crisis situations, including lockdowns, evacuations, or other emergency procedures, according to policy.
N. Report any malfunctions of security equipment, such as cameras, alarms, and access control systems.
O. Stay updated on security best practices and protocols, attending training sessions and workshops as required.
P. Adhere to ethical and professional standards, ensuring the highest quality of care for individuals in crisis.
Q. Effectively uses metal detection wands for search upon admission, charging them when not in use.
R. Performs hand-off communication at shift change and prepares end of shift report.
S. Demonstrates willingness to work on any unit / program at SpectraCare based on facility needs as directed.
2. Applies seclusion, protective holds and/or restraint per SpectraCare Policy and Procedures.
A. Complete all required documentation regarding seclusion and restraint prior to end of shift.
B. Manages physically aggressive individuals in a manner which protects individual dignity, respect, and self-esteem.
C. Follows SpectraCare Policy and Procedure, as well as Managing Crisis Safely (MCS)
Procedures during restraint and/or other hold techniques.
3. Regular attendance with timely arrival and departure according to scheduled hours.
A. Must be able to work assignments as necessary to include but not limited to after hours, nights, holidays and/or weekends as scheduled.
B. To ensure individual/employee safety while on duty, must remain awake during scheduled
working hours.
4. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor to include:
A. Treat individuals with respect and courtesy at all times.
B. Ensure necessary documentation is completed in a timely manner with minimal errors and in compliance with applicable guidelines and policies.
C. Receive and respond to inquiries promptly and courteously.
D. Participate in trainings and other administrative meetings as scheduled.
E. Meet with supervisor on a regular basis.
F. Maintain time sheet accurately.
G. Perform all duties with the highest standard of ethics.
H. Provide coverage during crisis moments with or without notice, assisting Mental Health Technicians as needed, etc.
I. Provide backup coverage in other programs as assigned.
J. Performs duties independently and/or with minimal supervision.
K. To ensure safety, functions within professional boundaries with individuals and others.
L. Works well with other staff and individuals to ensure safety of program.
M. Functions and performs well in stressful environments and manages work related stress to ensure individual/staff safety.
N. Adhere to Dress Code as set forth in the SpectraCare policies and procedures.
O Follow guidelines of SpectraCare Personnel Policy, SpectraCare Clinical Policy, including but
not limited to the Alabama Administrative Code, CMS, and all other applicable regulating and contractual entities.
P. Applies seclusion, protective holds and/or restraint per SpectraCare policy and procedures.
Q. Documents crises, protective holds, seclusions and restraints.
R. Participates in beginning/end of shift unit reporting.
S. Demonstrates willingness to work on any unit / program at SpectraCare based on facility needs as directed.
T. Other services, tasks, functions, and responsibilities deemed necessary; not otherwise specified.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBLITIES/FUNCTIONS/TASKS:
- Attend mandatory trainings as required by ADMH or other agencies.
- Attend departmental meetings and other assigned meetings.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability to respond professionally in a crisis situation.

- Ability to communicate with mentally ill, substance abuse, developmental disability individuals as well as community agencies, other professionals and the public at large.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Complete initial new hire training.
- Complete required on the job training (OJT) training by the department.
- Obtain proper certifications needed to perform job duties.

WORK ENVIRONNMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to implement therapeutic holds and/or restraints.
- Ability to kneel and reach to same side of body with both hands on the floor.
- Ability to put one’s own body weight on one knee and one elbow on the same side of one’s body.
- This position requires upper body strength like that required to do push ups.
- Maintaining back extension while in prone position (stomach toward floor) with one’s own body weight on forearms, thighs, knees to feet. This physical demand may be frequent in nature.
- Strong grasp is needed to maintain constant contact with an individual during a restraint procedure or with other therapeutic hold techniques.
- Physical fitness and the ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.
- There are times that require the employee to be able to ambulate as quickly as possible to assist with an individual in a restraint procedure (for example, jog or run).
- Work location is primarily in a temperature-controlled building but also requires patrol of the premises in variable weather conditions.
- Must understand and practice good ergonomic movements to avoid injuries.
- Job requires occasional use of office equipment and ability to correctly lift up to fifty (50) pounds on an infrequent basis.
- Job requires frequent bending, squatting, lunging, twisting and reaching.
- Required to talk to or hear staff, individuals, and/or others.
- Employee may be exposed to one or more of the following: disagreeable odors, chemicals such as disinfectants, cleansers, soaps, etc; latex, plastic and other materials used for personal protective equipment; noise and distractions; unpleasant sights; unpredictable behaviors; contagious diseases; and/or wet floors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Possess a valid Driver License with good MVR.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Additional training in security or law enforcement is preferred.
- Knowledge of security procedures and protocols, particularly in crisis or emergency situations.
- Excellent observation and surveillance skills, with the ability to identify potential security risks and respond quickly.
- Ability to effectively communicate.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
- Physical fitness and the ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience as a security guard, preferably in a healthcare or mental health setting.
- Knowledge of security procedures and protocols, particularly in crisis or emergency situations.
- Excellent observation and surveillance skills, with the ability to identify potential security risks and respond quickly.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals in crisis.
- Basic understanding of mental health and substance use disorders.
