General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, position is responsible for overseeing the Loriella Pool Learn to Swim Program, offering quality swimming lessons to all participants, aged 6 months through adult.

Employee is responsible for the safety of class participants, planning, implementing, and delivering effective and qualitative programs for customers of all ages and abilities.

Must successfully demonstrate service, integrity, and pride while working with the general public.

Hours will vary Mon - Fri. 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. / 6 - 8 p.m. May - August.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supports the mission, vision, and goals of the Spotsylvania County Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises swimming lesson instructors.
  • Oversees the swimming lesson program. Ensures lessons are starting on time, and that appropriate methods are used to teach the skills for each particular swimming level.
  • Works closely with the Pool Manager on duty.
  • Assigns instructors each session to the level of lessons they will be teaching following the minimums and maximums by class level.
  • Prepares swim lesson schedule for printing.
  • Works with supervisor to adjust, cancel, or add swim classes accordingly before the start of each session.
  • Works with supervisor to determine weather-related cancellations or postponements.
  • Calls participants that do not show up to first class.
  • Distributes instructor materials (attendance rosters, program info, evaluations) the first days of each session.
  • Instructs swim lessons as needed.
  • Distributes course evaluations from the 2nd to last class.
  • Communicates with parents/participants responding to questions and concerns.
  • Ensures equipment used is safe, age-appropriate, and in working order. Reports needs for equipment to supervisor.
  • Instructs swimming lessons according to guidelines set forth by Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Prepares class lesson plans for assigned classes.
  • Provides appropriate and professional feedback to instructors and participants on performance.
  • Completes administrative tasks in a timely manner.
  • Meets timesheet, schedule, and registration deadlines.
  • Provides outstanding customer service to all customers and participants.
  • Maintains current required certifications.
  • Conducts and attends mandatory staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Wears proper uniform (County issued) and represents Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Dept. in a professional manner.
  • Ensure the safety of instructors and participants at all times.
  • Enforces pool policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the aquatics facility in accordance with the Pool Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Ensures instructor-to-participant ratios are met at all times.
  • Ensures that the aquatic environment is free of obstructions and safe for participant use.
  • Ensures the facility is secure, monitors and checks all doors and gates are locked before leaving the swimming pool area.
  • Fulfills the function of a Lifeguard as needed.
  • Fulfills the function of a Swim Lesson Instructor as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma and experience providing the required swimming skills and knowledge to perform swim lesson coordination.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI) preferred or comparable experience in teaching swim lessons or coaching swim teams is required.

Certifications in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or Community CPR/First Aid/AED preferred.

Must complete in-house swim lesson instructor training upon hire.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification is preferred, but not required.

Must successfully complete mandatory Parks & Recreation Training Program before specific job duties are assigned.

Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and drug screen.

  • Ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to learn and understand relatively basic principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in the absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and policies, and follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and objectives.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, determine percentages, and determine time and weight.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to run, bend, and walk to meet the needs of the position. Tasks require the ability to exert medium to heavy physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.Ability to work outdoors in an aquatics environment. Instructors are required to teach the majority of their lessons from in the water.

Must demonstrate the ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints. Must be able to remain alert. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Must be able to withstand outdoor temperatures. Ability to recognize visual and verbal distress signs/actions from potential drowning victims within 10 seconds. Ability to respond to an emergency situation including but not limited to a water emergency, respiratory or cardiac emergency, minor/major first aid, and a missing person. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
