SUMMARY : The Birthparent / Adoption Caseworker provides services to all members of the adoption triad (birthparents, adoptive families, and adoptees) and to the community which surrounds them. Primary responsibilities include the decision-making counseling with those facing unplanned pregnancy, home studies, placement and post-placement services to adoptive couples and birth families, support services to adoptive families and older adoptees and community outreach and education. The worker needs to work well in consultation with other professionals and should consider the provision of education about adoption issues to be a constant goal.
Caseworker Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Provide client direct services and case management to adoptive families, adoptees, birthparent clients and significant others, children waiting placement and foster families, according to agency policies and procedures.
Consult with the Birthparent / Adoption Supervisor as needed and keep supervisor advised of current cases, potential problems, or other situations in the area.
Travel area to provide client services or transport children as needed.
Document services through case notes, reports, correspondence, and verbal consultation.
Provide consultation, education / enrichment services, and outreach to clergy, congregations, schools, medical community, and appropriate agencies.
Proved educational seminars and talks as requested by supervisor.
Always maintain confidentiality and protect the resources of the agency through prudent use of time, travel, and supplies.
In consultation with the Birthparent / Adoption Supervisor, recruit, recommend licensing, train, evaluate, and support homes for infant foster care placement.
Represent St. John's United at professional gatherings and conference as requested by the Adoption Supervisor.
Continue self-education regarding counseling issues through consultation, reading and seminars.
Provide coverage for other staff member in their absence as needed.
Requirements
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE :
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in social work or human services field.
At least two years of experience in direct client counseling services.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities :
Excellent written and verbal communication & interpersonal skills
Demonstrate cultural competence & sensitivity to population served
Proven ability to work with diverse groups and build strong partnerships
Support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of St. John's United
Proficient in the use of computers and Microsoft office programs and virtual web platforms
Knowledge of family dynamics, marriage relationships, communication skills, child development and grief counseling.
Knowledge of, or willingness to acquire knowledge of, the special dynamics present in unplanned pregnancies, infertility, and adoption issues.
Knowledge of the pregnancy experience, birth process and the ability to form empathic and supportive relationship with the pregnant client.
The ability to develop community resources for referrals and to promote the services and mission of St. John's United in his / her own area.
The ability to work independently in stressful and sometimes isolated circumstances and the ability to accept consultation and supervision as needed.
The flexibility to provide services on short notice, to travel within the area or to another area and utilize effective decision making and discretion.

Requires moderate bending, standing and reaching activities
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Normal office setting. No hazardous material exposure
