Description

The Assistant Director of Nursing responsibilities include: The management of the Nursing Department and the direction and supervision of hospital wide nursing activities on his/her designated shift. Administrative decisions utilizing knowledge of hospital policies and nursing standards. Knowledge regarding social, economic and legal issues affecting the healthcare System. Seeks opportunities for keeping up-to-date in healthcare practices Develops, directs, implements and ensures compliance with Standards of Nursing Practice that promote optimal healthcare delivery. Meets the Joint Commission Standards for Nursing. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Principle Accountabilities: % of Time Spent

  • Monitors environment of safety by utilizing established safety practices. 5 % a.Supports and participates in risk management program to prevent and/or reduce risks to patients and staff, based on Hospital Policy and Nursing Standards. This includes: overseeing that safety measures are carried out to prevent patients from harming themselves or others, (i.e. standards for restraints, fall reduction program etc. and supervising the appropriate use of incident reports.) b. Supervises and adheres to concepts of infection control by complying with the standards for Universal Precautions. c. Recognizes safety hazards and acts to protect patient/self, etc. d. Assumes responsibility for obtaining appropriate and properly functioning equipment on an emergency basis.e. Adheres to all Hospital/Department/Unit Standards for fire reporting/drills, disaster reporting/drills, tornado protective measures, bomb threats, completes CPRrecertification every other year. f. Assumes Incident Command role during Emergency Operations.
  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organization and Department of Nursing goals and objectives. 5%
  • Demonstrates the ability to competently assume administrative responsibilities which include, but are not limited to: 10% a.Using experience, hospital policies and nursing standards for sound decision-making practice.b. Conferring with the Administrator “on call” whenever necessary.c. Demonstrating ability to set priorities and to use time effectively.d. Apprising appropriate Director and/or NM/ANM of all matters which may require administrative attention, distinguishing between matters requiring prompt attention and those that can wait.e. Demonstrating ability to adjust to changing situations.f. Making recommendations for corrective action when problems are identified, taking immediate action when situation necessitates.g. Respond to patient/family requests and provide service recovery as necessary.
  • Demonstrates the ability to staff appropriately to ensure quality patient care by: 50 % a. Analyzing staffing data to determine appropriate staffing patterns for all nursing units, utilizing professional judgment and experience, staff availability, acuity, skill mix, census, specialty involved, etc. when adjusting staffing patterns.b. Maintaining flexible staffing patterns by encouraging personnel to work various shiftsas needed.c. Recording approved/unapproved time off in appropriate ledgers and notifying nursing unit(s) as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to competently carry out the following responsibilities which include, but are not limited to: 20% a.Collaborating with the Bed Control personnel and the admitting secretary in the Emergency Room when allocating beds for admissions, transfers, etc.b. Participating actively in committees and task forces when requested to do so.c. Participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of Standards of Nursing Practice.d. Assisting the NM/ANM with evaluating/disciplining employees as necessary.e. Serving as a resource person for nursing personnel and other departments when requested.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for self-directed learning and professional development. This is evidenced by participating actively in continuing education activities relevant to Nursing practice by acquiring a minimum of 15 contact hours annually. 5%

    Education

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or its equivalent is required.

    Masters Degree is preferred for full/part-time employees.

    License - Certification - Registration (Text Only)

    Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Missouri.

    Experience

    A minimum of three to four years of recent nursing experience during which administrative and supervisor competence has been demonstrated. One year management experience preferred.

    Familiar with hospital organization, policies, functions and inter-department relationships.

    Writing skills are necessary to prepare and review records, charts, and management reports.

    Ability to plan, organize, lead, and direct activities on a hospital-wide basis.

    Knowledge on the Joint Commission and other external regulating agency standards.

    Current certification in a Basic Life Support required or course

    COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY. PARTICIPATION IN A BLS, IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.

    Job Relationships: Member of a comprehensive healthcare team, including other health care providers, the patient, the patients family and significant others. Takes direction from: Directors of Nursing and/or Vice President - Patient Services Provides direction to: Nursing Staff on division Supervised by: Directors of Nursing and/or Vice President-Patient Services

    Working Conditions

    Employee is required to walk occasionally and sit frequently. Employee must lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.) medium and (21-50 lbs.) load occasionally and heavy ( 50lbs. ) load occasionally. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs with assistance. Employee is frequently required to bend, squat, lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to perform simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Verbal and cognitive, as well as motor coordination and manual dexterity required. Speech, hearing, and near-visual acuity are required. May be needed to work any shift due to 24-hour day, 7 days per week operation. Employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens.

    Occasionally: 1-33%, Frequently: 34-66%, Continuously: 67-100%

    The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.
