What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at St. Mary's Residential Training School?
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, and engages the clients in fun, meaningful aquatic activities.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)
1. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, and maintains a clean, safe, and orderly pool area (e.g., restrooms, changing rooms, deck, and surrounding areas).
2. Inspects facilities and rescue equipment daily and reports any unsafe conditions to the Day Program Manager immediately.
3. Prevents accidents by remaining in a state of emergency readiness and maintaining constant surveillance and visually scanning the pool area while the pool is in use and enforcing health and safety rules.
4. Assists all swimmers in entering and exiting the pool, and remains alert for problems with swimmers who are seizure prone or have other health concerns. Interact with all swimmers while they are in the pool.
5. Takes appropriate safety or emergency measures as needed and reports all emergencies and unusual incidents to the Day Program Manager and Nursing department immediately. This may include, but is not limited to, performing lifesaving activities, administering first aid and/or CPR, acquiring emergency services, or other measures until the issue is resolved or emergency services arrive.
6. Takes attendance and documents activities, pool closures, chemical checks and readings, and other services as required by the Day Program Manager and St. Mary’s policy and procedures.
7. Notify the Day Program Manager when chemicals need to be added or purchased.
8. Ensure the pool and surrounding areas are ready for swimmers, and clean the pool and surrounding areas after swimming activities.
9. Responds to emergencies, disasters, and facility evacuations by providing assistance, supervision, and leadership to clients and staff at St. Mary’s and at the evacuation sites.
10. Performs all other duties as required by the Day Program Manager, Programs Director, and Administrator.
11. Maintains a dignified appearance by adhering to the following dress requirements daily:
a. Females
i. Red or blue one-piece lifeguard bathing suit (no two-piece)
ii. Swim shorts
iii. T-shirt
iv. Shoes that are easily slipped off (no boots)
v. Towel
b. Males
i. Red or blue lifeguard swim trunks (no racing trunks)
ii. T-shirt
iii. Shoes that are easily slipped off (no boots)
iv. Towel
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
· Language: Must be able to read, write, and speak in English.
· Mathematical Skills: Must be able to do simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and use common fractions and decimals and interpret bar graphs.
· Education: A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
· Experience: Previous lifeguarding experience is preferred. Must be able to swim and go under water.
· Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
· Must have a valid Louisiana driver’s license
· Proof of Lifeguarding certification
· Proof of First Aid certification
· Proof of CPR/AED certification
· Other Skills or Abilities:
· Remain patient, calm, and helpful, especially during emergencies
· Ability to test chemical levels and make adjustments as required
· Maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job functions
· Physical Requirements:
· Ability to lift a person off of the bottom and out of the water
· Comfortable getting in, remaining in, and getting out of the water
· Stand, sit, stoop, bend, kneel, and reach with arms and hands
