Position Summary/Objective
The Manager of Volunteers promotes a culture of safety, hospitality, service, honor, and respect among our homeless guests, our staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of furthering the vision and mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
St. Vincent de Paul Society is, at its heart, a people organization. Our volunteer program is an integral part of fulfilling our mission of Christian accompaniment. We have a long tradition of groups and individuals who want to serve our mission. The Manager of Volunteers, who reports to the Chief of Staff, will be responsible for the successful implementation and oversight of the overall volunteer program including supporting recruitment and onboarding, training and placement, engagement and retention. The Manager will focus on providing a supportive volunteer experience for our thousands of volunteers.
The ideal candidate would have knowledge and experience managing a successful volunteer program, preferably experience working in the nonprofit field. Preferred skills include detailed oriented, exceptional organizational skills, ability to use digital technologies and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with great communication skills.
Essential functions
- Develop, promote, and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities within the organization.
- Maintain accurate and timely volunteer schedules.
- Recruit, interview, and place volunteer applicants in appropriate volunteer positions.
- Work with volunteers and staff to promote a positive St. Vincent de Paul experience, resolving any issues in a timely manner and continually look for ways to improve the experience.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and provide analytics on volunteer participation.
- Establish and maintain monthly or more frequent email communication with volunteers and prospective volunteers, utilizing database technologies.
- Host group service days for the greater Dayton community to deepen volunteer relationships with St. Vincent de Paul and to recruit new volunteers.
- Grow the volunteer program per set annual goals, staffing operations and guest engagement roles in the emergency shelter.
- Work with supportive housing and the thrift store to identify volunteer needs and recruit and staff volunteers as needed for their programs.
- Represent St. Vincent de Paul at community events, volunteer fairs, etc.
- Work directly with the Associate Director of Human Resources and Director of Neighborhood Ministries to represent the volunteer base and how we can ensure people goals are met collectively across the organization.
- Complete background checks and mandatory training of volunteers.
- Supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise one Volunteer Coordinator
- Overall supervision of volunteers with knowledge of who is onsite and volunteering at all times
Physical demands

Must be able to move around all of our facilities, some lifting (35 pounds or less) and manual work may be required as you work alongside volunteer groups.
Travel percentage
Local travel as required to supervise volunteers and represent the community.
Qualifications
Required education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Non-Profit Management, Ministry or related field
- 3-5 years of experience working in social/human services delivery or ministry environment, or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience working with people in a customer service-oriented role
- Computer/Microsoft Office software.
- Database Management experience
- Oral/Written Communication skills
Preferred education and experience
- Supervisory experience
- Previous management of a volunteer programs
Additional eligibility requirements
- This position requires a valid driver’s license and transportation
- The person in this role will need to work some weekends and holidays, coordinating the volunteers with other 24/7 supervisory staff
Salary : $55,000 - $65,000
