Performs moderate technical work converting geographic information to digital data. Responsible for field and office GPS/GIS support including data acquisition and data manipulation. Work is performed under regular supervision.
• Develops and implements solutions to problems involving geographic data and products;
• Prepares and maintains files and records; • Collection of water and wastewater asset data using GPS equipment;
• Performs edits on asset layers (points, lines, and polygons) and attribute data with respects to as-built drawings;
• Researches and resolves conflicting data problems; • Provides qualitative/quantitative analysis; creates map products to support various programs and projects;
• Performs related task as required.• Knowledge of principles and concepts of Geographic Information System (GIS);
• General knowledge of computer software and hardware;
• Ability to use personal computer, office equipment, and related software;
• Ability to effectively communicate ideas both vocally and in writing;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, government officials, and the general public.This is an internship position and candidates must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university program with Geographic Information Systems coursework – ex. Intro to GIS, Cartography, Spatial Analysis, GIS in Environmental Science, Planning, or related geographic information systems coursework.
Experience in the following software is preferred: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro , ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Collector/Survey 123, GPS field devices, Microsoft Office (Word/Excel), Adobe Acrobat, Python programming, SQL, and Geodatabase editing, and design.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work may be performed in a standard office environment or in the field. Office work requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Work requires reaching, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through vocal communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Field work is performed in outdoor environment subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
