The Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services is recruiting for eight (8) Corrections Nurse 1/2 (Itinerant Nurse) positions in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing:
The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Triage and assess patients;
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments;
  • Provide general nursing care to patients;
  • Provide, participate, and assist in therapeutic activities;
  • Maintain patient medical records;
  • Observe, document, and report changes in the physical and mental conditions of the inmates;
  • Be team-oriented;
  • Handle crisis situations in a calm and effective manner.

This Position works week on / week off between all the Department of Corrections Facilities:
  • Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC)
  • Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) - Nome
  • Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) - Wasilla
  • Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) - Eagle River
  • Ketchikan Correctional Center (KCC) 
  • Lemon Creek Correctional Center (LCCC) - Juneau
  • Mat-Su Pretrial (MSPT) - Palmer
  • Palmer Correctional Center (PCC)
  • Spring Creek Correctional Center (SCCC) - Seward
  • Wildwood Correctional Center (WCC) - Kenai 
  • Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center (YKCC) Bethel
These facilities provide a variety of medical services to patient populations ranging from 100 to 1500 in size. Nurses working in correctional settings must become fluent in our policy, procedures and protocols as well as have a deep understanding of their scope of practice. Communication is key in this setting, the ability to work with the variety of specialties within Health and Rehabilitation Service in order to meet standard of care and fulfill our Mission and Vision.

CORRECTIONS NURSE 1

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.

CORRECTIONS NURSE 2
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;AND EITHERSuccessful completion of a formal training plan as a Corrections Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska;OROne year of entry level experience as a Registered Nurse. Examples of this experience include but are not exclusively limited to prior service as a Corrections Nurse 1, Psychiatric Nurse 1, or Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.Substitution:Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med-Surg, Psychiatric, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case-by-case basis. 
Special Note: 
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska and requisite qualifying experience, may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.
 
Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
 
Some positions may require the successful applicant to provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire. Employees are required to be tested annually. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • This position requires travel outside the Anchorage area. Travel often varies from 7 - 10 days.

PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s eligibility. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher-level job class after completing the training plan and meeting the minimum qualifications.

Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position.
