Class Definition
The Library Assistant - Digitization is a grant-funded position and will be the lead, under the supervision of the State Librarian, to digitize the State Library's Rhode Island Public Laws as part of an in-house digitization project. The Library Assistant - Digitization's work will contribute to State Library's efforts to enable the Department of State to achieve its mission : promoting transparent government, supporting businesses, and strengthening our democracy through a commitment to civic engagement, secure elections, and empowering voters.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
Administrative : Performs office work required to create a digitized index as part of an in-house digitization project. The Library Assistant performs various duties including, but not limited to :
- Use a cradle scanner to scan Public Law books
- Ensure quality of scans;
- Name all files using the provided naming convention;
- Run optical character recognition software (OCR) on scans;
- Assist in creating the controlled vocabulary for the metadata;
- Assist in creating metadata for all files; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications for Appointment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of, or currently enrolled in, a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.

Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit.
