What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parent Advocate position at Steps to End Domestic Violence?
The Parent Advocate provides advocacy and support services for parents and other caregivers who have been affected by domestic violence. The Parent Advocate assists in the facilitation of curriculum-based groups for parents/caregivers and their children to engage in violence prevention and address the impact of domestic violence on their lives. In addition, the Parent Advocate represents the interests of families affected by domestic violence in the organization and in various community groups/settings. The Parent Advocate is on the Direct Services Team and reports to the Children’s Program Coordinator.
Essential Functions:
- Support children’s program services including:
o One-on-one support services for caregivers and their children
o Parental education services
- Provide information, advocacy, individual and group support, and referrals from the hotline, community partners, and to residents in emergency housing.
- Communicate with local schools and other Agency and community organizations for coordination of services.
- Organize and facilitate weekly support groups for caregivers in our shelter and the broader community using evidence-based curricula
- Participate in relevant community meetings as capacity allows
- Develop and maintain working relationships with relevant community partners and service providers
- Maintain complete and accurate service user records, via paper files and through timely and accurate data entry into case management data system
- All other administrative and direct service duties as directed by the supervisor
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Share responsibility for anti-racist, multi-cultural organizational perspective and Steps to End Domestic Violence’s social change mission
- Participate in team meetings, all-staff meetings and trainings, and supervision meetings
- Participate in performance evaluations and annual program planning
- Participate in hotline coverage and shelter support
- Participate in and present at agency-wide meetings and events including the Community Advocate Training as needed
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.
Working Conditions:
Primarily working in a residential shelter environment. Position will require service provision at other locations in the community and attendance at some community meetings. Varied weekend and/or evening hours may be required. Some local travel required. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of the causes and effects of domestic abuse and related safety issues
- Direct practice experience in victim services or other social services
- Direct practice experience working with children
- Competency regarding serving families and children from multicultural and other underserved populations
- Group facilitation skills including team building and conflict resolution
- Demonstrated knowledge of community resources
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with data entry required
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings
- Access to reliable transportation
