Full-Time Faculty, Nursing Simulation (Rank Open)

Summary:
This is a 9-month, full-time, campus-based faculty position in the Nursing Department, Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions, with responsibilities for teaching, student advising and mentoring, course development, service to the school, department, and university, and continued scholarship in the field. Teaching responsibilities include 24-30 contact hours per academic year, commensurate with rank, including but not limited to simulation, theory (didactic), and/or clinical experience hours. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student recruitment and retention; program assessment; and engagement in the life of the university. The faculty member, Nursing Simulation fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the School of Nursing and Health Professions Full-Time Faculty Job Description. Rank and title are determined at the time of hire and will be commensurate with education and experience.

Education/Experience:
Doctorate degree in nursing or a related field and a Masters degree in nursing required for the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Masters degree in nursing required for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. College level teaching experience, clinical nursing experience within the past 1-4 years, and at least two years of experience in nursing simulation are preferred. CPR certification is required and CNE or certification in area of clinical practice preferred. Must be Maryland Board of Nursing certified or eligible.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Demonstrated teaching ability in nursing, including the proficient use of high fidelity and other simulation systems in clinical education.
  • Knowledge of current teaching/learning theories and processes in simulation education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse constituencies.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy college environment on a campus with buildings and laboratories separated by some distance. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends. Position requires sitting and standing for long periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.

Essential Functions:
The essential functions for the full-time faculty member in nursing are taken from the Full-Time Faculty Job Description developed by the faculty of the Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions. The exact percentage for each category is determined by the faculty member and the Program Director as part of the annual appraisal and professional development planning process.
INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY
  • Engage in instructional activity totaling 24-30 contact hours per academic year as assigned by Academic Program Administrator (APA). Teaching assignments will include, but are not limited to theory, simulation, and/or clinical experience hours. Simulation instructional activity includes:
    • In collaboration with nursing faculty, ensure the integration of simulation technology and education strategy in curriculum implementation.
    • Collaborate with faculty to provide learning experiences that align with course and clinical learning objectives.
    • Facilitate simulation and skills-based learning experiences according to evidence-based standards and best practice guidelines.
    • Utilize web-based and online systems to manage documents related to simulation and skills-based learning objectives and course outcomes.
    • Provide Clinical Supervisors in clinical courses with orientation and training in simulation as appropriate.
    • Partner with adjunct simulation educators/technicians in developing and delivering simulation education.
    • Collaborate with nursing faculty/staff, Office of Information Technology, and external vendors as needed for maintenance and technical support of simulation equipment, including troubleshooting and testing equipment as needed.
  • Teaching responsibilities include time spent in face-to-face courses, laboratories, or simulated clinical experiences and in immediate preparation for them; preparing teaching materials; conferring with and providing timely feedback to students on course-related matters; directing individual and group studies; reviewing projects and papers; evaluating assignments, examinations, presentations, and other course work in timely fashion; supervising independent study projects; and submitting mid-term and final grades. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system.
  • Administrative responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis.
  • Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback.
  • Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines.
  • Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week.
  • Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the Department, Nursing Unit, School, and University.
  • Evaluate, update and revise courses regularly.
  • Attend meetings and/or workshops related to education (e.g., teaching methods, assessment).
  • Implement new teaching methods in existing courses (includes incorporating evidence-based practice).
  • Mentor students in research courses and/or projects related to specialty scholars program requirements as warranted.
  • Mentor students in graduate nursing programs as warranted.
  • Serve as course coordinator for nursing course(s) as requested, including the implementation of new teaching methods, strategies or tools in nursing courses.
  • Provide course coordinators and/or APA with all required course data, as related to course and program assessment and/or accreditation.
  • Evaluate and revise curricula as warranted and/or requested.
  • Conceive and develop new courses to expand academic offerings within the faculty members discipline as requested.
SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
  • Develop and maintain self-directed intellectual pursuits, including research, that enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Conduct self-directed research with students (bench, educational, or other) of a quality that could lead to presentation or publication, including presentation/publication in venues dedicated to undergraduate research.
  • Engage in intellectual pursuits outside of the classroom that are related to professional interests (e.g., grant-writing, peer review, authorship of texts, chapters and journal articles).
  • Attend workshops, meetings, and talks related to professional interests.
  • Attend meetings of professional societies.
  • Pursue and maintain clinical certification(s).
  • Pursue and maintain advanced practice certification(s).
  • Maintain current/relevant clinical nursing practice as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing to keep Registered Nurse license and enhance teaching/learning.
SERVICE ACTIVITY
  • Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental and nursing unit meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental and nursing unit events; and establishing professional relationships to generate clinical placement opportunities for students.
  • University service includes, but is not limited to, service on the University, School and Departmental committees.
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the department, Nursing Unit, School of Nursing and Health Professions, and Stevenson University.
  • Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, and Department meetings.
  • Attend all convocations, including commencement exercises.
  • Complete all required trainings and professional learning assignments.
  • Participate in faculty governance.
  • Mentor students (e.g., club moderator, mentoring programs - distinguished from guiding research or academic pursuits)
  • Actively participate on Department, Nursing Unit, School, and University committees.
  • Participate in recruitment and yield events.
  • Participate in Department, School, and University assessment activities, including, but not limited to, annual assessment of courses and periodic assessments of programs for University and/or accreditation purposes.
  • Mentor and advise new faculty.
  • Serve on Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee(s) as requested.
  • Serve on at least one Nursing Unit Working Group.
