Estimate Preparation:
Job Summary:
The Estimator is responsible for accurately assessing and preparing cost estimates for construction projects, particularly those involving excavation work. This role requires a deep understanding of project specifications, industry standards, and the ability to analyze project plans and specifications. The Estimator will collaborate with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure all estimates are thorough, competitive, and align with the company's financial goals.
Estimator Key Responsibilities:
- Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and drawings.
- Create and distribute “Invitation to Bid” documents to vendor and subcontractor partners.
- Perform quantity take-offs for excavation and utility projects.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates with Heavy Bid software. Includes identifying complete scopes and lowest pricing from vendors and subcontractors. Finalizing estimates with OH&P strategies that align with company goals and current market values.
- Develop and maintain a database of costs for different types of excavation and utility work.
Bid Management:
- Identify, track and respond to all bid requests that align with the company's scope and geographic areas of work. Includes managing 5 to 8 estimates at one time.
- Prepare detailed and concise bid proposals to ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate.
- Submit bids on time and follow up with clients as necessary.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to gather information and clarify project requirements.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Point of contact for project clients, owners and developers to provide budget assistance and VE Options.
- Communicate effectively with clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to resolve discrepancies and clarify details.
- Negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing.
- Work closely with project managers, superintendents, and other team members to provide necessary project hand-off information and insights. Includes estimate reports, subcontractor/supplier quotes, and other required data for contract setup.
- Assist Project Managers and Superintendent with contract change order pricing as needed.
Project Analysis:
- Analyze and evaluate historical data and industry trends to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
- Review post-project analysis to compare estimated costs with actual costs and identify areas for improvement.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, bids, and project information.
- Prepare and present detailed cost reports and estimates to senior management.
- Update and maintain estimating software and tools.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure all estimates comply with relevant regulations, codes, and industry standards.
- Promote and adhere to safety policies and procedures in all aspects of work.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator) are a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably with a focus on civil excavation and utility projects.
- Proven track record of preparing accurate and competitive estimates.
Skills:
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
