SUMMARY : Under the Direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, accurately and safely applies all pest control products and liquid fertilizers within the guidelines of local, state and federal laws, and the Grasslands Club policies and standards. This position will apply chemicals and fertilizers in an efficient, safe, cost-effective and professional manner.

The Spray Technician must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver. As required, he / she will seek information and refer specific unique problems / opportunities to the Golf Course Superintendent for clarification or interpretation of policy and / or action.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes but is not limited to the following :

  • Responsible for application and recording of fertilizers and pesticides on the golf courses and grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Follow all company and departmental policies and procedures in a strict fashion.
  • Further his / her continued development by participating in appropriate seminars and conferences as approved of by the GC Superintendent.
  • Will coordinate internally with the Assistant Superintendents, Equipment Manager, and staff (when appropriate).
  • Will remain current with chemical and spray principles and how they apply to personal safety, environmental accountability, all associated pesticides and materials, cost of materials, application equipment, proper application practices, cost of application equipment, care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Will remain current with all local, state and federal laws associated with pesticide use and all mix / load procedures established by Grasslands Club. Perform routine safety inspections on all spraying equipment.
  • Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state and federal regulations.
  • Ensure the safety of and direct all chemical handlers and / or helpers.
  • Understand turf cultural practices.
  • Understand fertilizers, plant nutrition, soil alkalinity and corrective methods.
  • Recognize healthy and unhealthy plants.
  • Recognize common weed seedlings and mechanical weed control methods.
  • Understand proper handling and planting of nursery stock and installation of sod.
  • Monitor the turf for any potential disease issues.
  • Care for lawn, trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants, including mowing, trimming, watering, pruning, spraying, and fertilizing.
  • Maintain safety awareness at all times, follow all safety rules and report safety hazards to the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and / or Experience

  • Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior golf and country club experience preferred.
  • Possess or will obtain a current State of Tennessee, Ornamental and Turf restricted use pesticide license with ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Requires a valid Tennessee driver's license.
  • Language : Ability to read, write and comprehend complex correspondence, memos, and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees.

    Mathematics : Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

    Reasoning : Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Exhibits professionalism and expressed interest in improvement through enhanced developmental skills, exhibit leadership, and expressed direction through own self-actions.
  • Requires knowledge of legal issues as it relates to Wage & Hour, OSHA, Department of Environmental Regulation & the Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Requires managerial / supervisory background and understanding of private club operations as it pertains to legal liability and employee relations.
  • Requires the individual to maintain flexible availability, will work weekends, and holidays. May be required to return to job site at odd hours under emergency situations.
  • Maintain a pleasant and outgoing personality and must not possess any extreme personal appearance characteristics as judged by a conservative membership base.
  • Must be respected in the Community.

  • Serves as a role model and sets a positive example for the entire staff in all aspects of business and personnel management.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and move about freely in a multi-floor building. The employee is frequently required to visually observe the condition of his / her surroundings. He / she is routinely required to bend, stoop, stand, walk, carry and lift objects weighing 75 pounds or less.
