Summary
The Laboratory Technician II provides support for the sample management operations at the Portsmouth site. This position is responsible for accepting samples from site personnel, sign over COC, and log them into our LIMS system. Samples would then be prepared for shipment for analytical testing. This position potentially conducts chemical and physical laboratory testing according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances.
Responsibilities
- Accepts samples from site personnel.
- Maintain chain of custody while samples are at the site.
- Store samples with proper preservation until ready for shipment off site.
- Prepare samples for testing, record data, and prepare shipping manifest.
Requirements
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- AS of Health Physics Chemistry or related field preferred
- 3 years experience in Laboratory or Field Science environment preferred
- Experience with data collection equipment or instrumentation preferred
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to use various test equipment and instrumentation
- Ability to communicate clearly and establish working relationships with customers.
- Strong computer skills (MS Office and database use.)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for prolonged periods
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, reach, stretch, kneel, and squat
- Must be able to perform repetitive tasks or motions for prolonged periods
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds at a time and push, pull, and/or group lift 150-pound loads at a time
- Must have sufficient physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina to complete various tasks.
- Must be able to work in personal protective equipment including but not limited to: safety glasses, fall-protection harness, protective footwear, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, a full or half mask respirator, and/or face mask.
Physical and Working Conditions
The working conditions for this position may include the following:
- Potential exposure to radiological, beryllium, and/or mercury contaminated material.
- Potential exposure to continuous loud noise produced by machinery and/or equipment.
