Position Summary
The Youth Advocate is responsible for developing and facilitating in the social and personal development of adolescents and teenagers. A Youth Advocate is a guide to youth and gives direction in their academic, vocational, and personal lives. The Youth Advocate is responsible for outreach and student retention within the program. Through rigorous outreach methods and student retention techniques, the SES will boost student school attendance for their caseload. All interactions and efforts will be digitally documented. Incentive systems to increase student attendance and engagement at school will be created and implemented as necessary.
Essential Functions:
- Arrange and facilitate workshops and small group sessions for youth, families, school and/or community members addressing social emotional development; navigating academic institutions; education and career planning; accessing social services; and more.
- Liaise between youth, families, schools, agencies, and other community partners to best support and advocate for youth.
- Engage youth individually to build trusting relationships; develop skills; and set goals.
- Identify behavioral, academic, health, and other barriers to youth success and help connect them to needed resources.
- Identify behavioral or mental issues and determine remedial measures through psychiatric and medical examinations.
- Assess the client’s home environments, conditions, and personal characteristics.
- Participate in mentoring activities, and assess the youth’s progress towards the fulfillment of decreed goals and objectives.
- Be aware of popular culture and trend to review and guide the youth properly.
- Demonstrating as a perfect role model.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Manages the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the group activities and carries out responsibilities in accordance with the federal, state, locals’ requirements as well as agency policies and applicable laws.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED required. College students encouraged to apply.
- 2 years’ experience working with children and/or youth in your specialization.
- Exemplary supervisory skills at elementary level (middle school or high school aged youth) and aptitude for motivating people.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently.
- Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines and multi-task.
